Amusement Park Operator Killed in Wash.

LANGLEY, Wash. (AP) - An amusement park operator was killed Saturday when his hair got caught on a roller coaster car, pulling him up as high as 40 feet before he fell, back-first, onto a fence.

Doug McKay, 40, was spraying lubricant on the tracks of the Super Loop 2, a ride at the Island County Fair on Whidbey Island, when his long hair got caught on a car full of fairgoers, sheriff's spokeswoman Jan Smith said.

``It basically scalped him, and he fell and landed on the fence,'' Smith said.

McKay, co-owner of Paradise Amusements, based in Post Falls, Idaho, was pulled between 25 and 40 feet into the air.

Paradise Amusements had set up rides at the Island County Fair, located about 30 miles northwest of Seattle, for the past three years, Smith said.

Smith said grief counselors were on hand but that the fair continued after the incident.

Well, yeah - after going through all that, I doubt they were of much help to the guy.

Praying for his family.

I was in show business for a number of years...owned rides and concessions. Still have close family members who do as well.

People have a dim attitude about show folks, generally, but guys like this are businessmen; with millions invested in equipment. Some of the best people I've ever known are carnies.

My heart goes out to all of the folks out there.

From the ride operator's website...

For over 4 decades the "McKay's" have been providing amusement attractions at fairs, festivals, celebration, and shopping centers. Even though the founder "Robert McKay" has retired, the family tradition is being carried on by his son, "Douglas McKay".

Paradise Amusements has a well balanced Carnival Midway, which includes rides for all ages, food, game concessions, and rest areas to provide the family atmosphere for your event. MARKETING

That doesn't sound like a fun ride or an amusing park. I think we'll go elsewhere this year.

yes, that was mean, and I'm embarrassed for you. A man died in a horrible way while he was just working for a living. Long hair does not make you a freak. My condolences and prayers to his family.

I was the police chief in Langley, Washington many years ago. I moved on to more prosperous things, but Langley and Whidbey Island are paradise on earth, and I think of this area often. Our small family had a home 100' from the Puget Sound beaches, below. We would often awake to the sounds of Orca (Killer) [sic] whales scratching and rubbing their backsides on the rocks below our house. The Island County fairgrounds are small town America. My son, age six, had a pony, and he (reluctantly) rode it through town on the opening day of the fair.

Bad things happen to good people, even in paradise..

My daughter and her Navy husband live in Oak Harbor. We were there a few months ago and Mrs. DFU now wants a summer home there.
