LOS ANGELES, Aug. 15 -- Before the first television ads have aired, the race to succeed California Gov. Gray Davis (D) if he is recalled came down to just two men, Republican action star Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz M. Bustamante, according to a nonpartisan statewide poll to be released Saturday.
The California Field Poll found 25 percent of registered voters opted for Bustamante followed by 22 percent for Schwarzenegger.

Doesn't mean that Arnold is behind (Field Poll...liberal leaning). But it does prove that, Arhnold needs to get out there and define what he stands for. Fame can only get you so far.
That and Bill Simon, Ubberoth, and McClintock will have to look hard and long to see if they want Bustamonte as governor IF this poll is accurate (which, the only one that counts is on October 7th...or March 7th if some liberal judge gets its way).

The poll, based on telephone interviews with 448 likely voters, was conducted Aug. 10-13 and had margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points. Weak poll. I bet they heavily weighted the Dems in the poll. Unless they are willing to give me the weight of the 448, I'm not willing to listen.

The guys with shrines to Reagan in their dens are no doubt well pleased now that instead of a moderate that could help other Republicans, California instead may get a total train wreck.
To: DoctorZIn
It still looks like:
1. Cruz
2. No Recall
3. The rest of the field.

California instead may get a total train wreck. If California voters are STUPID enough to vote another dem in the office .... they deserve everything they get.

Field poll is notoriously skewed in its practise....always finds more liberal dems and always calls during the day time the more accurate polls have Arnold way out front and Cruz will not do well except in his community

The California Field Poll found 25 percent of registered voters opted for Bustamante followed by 22 percent for Schwarzenegger.Key words there are "registered voters." The Schwarzenegger types are FAR more likely to turn out than the Bustamante voters.

No way, no way, no way. This poll is contrary to every other poll and personal experience. Arnold is causing people to vote who have never voted before.
The field poll said Kathleen Brown would beat Pete Wilson. Hehee.

And the ultrapurists still want to vote for McClintock I see we still haven't articulated our position clearly yet!
I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I believe that divided support for good Republican candidates early in the campaign doesn't translate to a conservative loss. It's possible to gain conservative mindshare in California with multiple candidates with similar messages.
Having several good Republican candidates shows that Californians are uniting to bring back business to our state. Reduced spending should be our simple message, one that involves eliminating entitlements and reducing boondoggle public projects, balancing budgets, and reducing taxes. The candidates will each assure us of their ability to use the veto pen, as well. And one way or another, they'll talk about bringing back legal immigration as the main way to enter this country and reap the benefits of our quasi-socialist society -- in a way that even legal immigrants can support.
There's a long way to go before any of us have to decide, and it's not the division that hurts us now. If we are gentlemen about discussing this, there is only more publicity and more opportunity to get the conservative message out to the centrists and conservative Democrats and Libertarians out there.
I support McClintock today because he has the simplest, most direct message and because he knows California. I'll be watching for other candidates to either endorse his views and assume them into their campaigns, or get behind McClintock himself. Either way, McClintock will be influencing California for the better each day of this campaign. I don't know him, but my sense is that we can trust him to run the best campaign for California's future.

McClintock for controller! Not governor. The man has never had a job outside of government in his life. Conservative or not, I don't want a wonk politician anymore. Give me a producer! At least Arnie has signed the FRONT of a paycheck before!

With Conquistador Bustamante as Governor, how long till California officially becomes Mexican Territory?
At least we won't have to run against their 54 electoral votes who wwould have gone to the Leftist candidate for President for at least the next 20 years.

Re the "skewed Field poll" --- Gee, ya think it's really skewed? I sure hope so, but if we have an election in October (or March, or whenever --) and the buzz is that Bustamante has it in the bag... we should all vote NO RECALL and, unfortunately, let Gay Davis continue....
Cruz would be worse than Davis, in my view.
To: DoctorZIn
It seems to me that we are fairly well fractured here in the CA Republican party now. Regardless of whether this "recall election" takes place October 7, or March of '04 or whenever -- we ought to agree to eventually get together and support our one leading candidate, whoever he (most probably a "he") appears to be at the time of the election.
The lively "discussions" here on FR are fun and thought provoking, and okay, sometimes just plain provoking, but can we agree to get TOGETHER towards the end of this road so we can finally oust the Dems, i.e., Davis and Bustamante and not have the same result we had in '02 when we got Davis for a second term?
Most of us already have our favorites but I think all except a few here are willing to listen to several points of view. As someone else said earlier, "ABC - anyone but Bustamante!" Even leaving Davis in place for another three years would be preferable, I believe.
