DAY TWO In Manhattan, the sun is rising but the lights are still out.
Commuters sleep on the steps of the Post Office on 33rd Street and Eighth Avenue in New York during the early hours of Friday, after being stranded by the city's electrical blackout.
A huge power failure swept through parts of the Northeast, Midwest and Canada on Thursday, shutting down trains, subways and airports from New York City to Detroit, forcing people into the streets.
At the ferry terminal on west 38th St., thousands of people without access to the subways and trains flocked to catch ferries, creating another form of gridlock.
Passengers on the downtown A train were stuck underground for two hours before being led out by MTA employees.
Waterway buses to Weehawken were filled to capacity.
Transit workers escorted riders off a subway car on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
Pedestrians clogged the Brooklyn Bridge as the power outage brought life to a standstill.
Dozens of people at the Lincoln Tunnel jumped on a truck to get a ride through the tunnel to New Jersey. The police made them all get off the truck.
The hallways of Saint Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan were dark after the blackout. Power generators lit emergency and patient care areas.
The whole of the city was dark and the setting sun painted one building.
If I had had the chance, I would have cursed at him. I was one of the lucky ones, since my job is very close to my home, I was frustrated with mayor doofus for not giving, on the minimum, best and worst case scenario's for time, or at least saying, he wouldn't know when the power would come back on.
Instead we got a lot of jibe, starting with the 2 or 4 or 6 or 8 hours, to later on, "as soon as possible" and lets thank new yorkers stuff.
But today, no shops, restaurants or newsstands are open. For some reason, the Post Office has decided not to deliver mail, and my newspaper delivery jackasses couldn't even be bothered to leave the newspapers with the doorman -- they just never showed up. Oh, and the phones in our building went out at 8:20 this morning and haven't been restored yet. Screw RCN. I'm going back to Verizon.
So while most people were pissy yesterday, today is my day to be that way.
Things are bad all around this whole big world, and not just for us pampered, insular and fat Americans who've generally never had it so good, in case you had not noticed. Quit complaining.
With all due respect, as a happy new yorker. What the hell difference does it make to me those 2/3rds people. They don't have power, fine, they probably don't miss not having it either. I'm not them, and our economy is not based on them. I'm sure someone, somewhere yesterday in some 3rd world country also got hit by a car, what, I'm supposed to compare there plight to mine? Its supposed to matter to me?
How 2/3rds of the world is doing, has no relevance to most of the people on this board unless it has a direct affect. Those people over there in the 3rd world, did not have an effect, the people in north america, did.
Yeah, on the phone from...where is she now, Cincinatti?
Some NY Senator.
This is why the TV show "Survivor" would be such a joke of a show in about 75% of the world. it's a legitimate perspective you don't want to hear. Fine. I'm thankful. That's all for now. :-)
She's waiting for Chuckie Schumer to do something and then claim credit for it...
