Hannity station went dead for about 20 seconds. Said he had never seen anything like it.

State of Emergency declared for NY State.
But not to worry....they say.
I just hope that nothing else happens.

That's the only way to go! I was wondering how "connected" the smaller divisions on the Eastern side of the map are.

Well, the Shiites did give our troops 24 hours to get out or the shiite would hit the fan...Yikes!

My power flickered here about the same time all of this started. I'm 60 miles due south of Oklahoma City. Not sure if it's in any way connected.Might have been your local power company yanking its connections to the grid (for lack of a more technical term) before the failure took it out too.

THIS IS SO ABSOLUTELY JUVENILE AND RIDICULOUS THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS INSULTING OUR INTELLIGENCE THIS WAY!
COULD THIS BE A GRID OUTAGE?! YEAH.
IS THAT THE LIKELIEST CAUSE? HELL NO!
YOU HAVE TO ASSUME TERRORISM IN A CASE LIKE THIS, AND FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO IMMEDIATELY COME OUT AND SAY "NO TERRORISM" - HOW IRRESPONSIBLE IS THAT?! HOW COULD THEY KNOW THAT?!?! ESPECIALLY THAT QUICKLY?!
I FEEL LIKE I'M LIVING IN THE TWILIGHT ZONE. THIS IS INSULTING! HOW CAN THEY DENY THE POSSIBILITY OF IT?!

Reporting in from Lycoming County. Everything is normal here. We must be on a different grid.

Wow, thanks for posting the map. I was hoping someone would. If it keeps cascading it could knock out half of North America.

Yes, one plant going down could cause widespread problems. It's not supposed to, but it can happen. The real problem is there are loop flow problems around Lake Erie on the transmission system, so I would think that could be a contributing factor to this wide spread outage, considering the cities that have been affected.

Ya know, if this is not terrorism related, it is a good test of emergency reactions. I was thinking the same thing, and further, maybe terrorist types are looking to test the same thing - either a happy accident for them, or a planned mini-event. Donning tinfoil hat now...
Almost like a foot race, who will figure out weaknesses first and fix or capitalize on them, good guys or bad...

IT doesn't stink at all. The grid is SUPPOSED to do this! On an overload, the grid is supposed to shut down..just like a circuit breaker in your house. They are safety mechanisms built in. The WHOLE eastern HALF of the United states is interconnected yet somewhat independent.
