Solar flare? Magnetic disruption due to pending geothermal activity (my pets have been a little flaky the past few days)?

I'm in Monmouth County New Jersey....power still up. I got air conditioning and cold beer if anyone needs to evacuate here....bring your own ice.

can tell you that here in Stockbridge Michigan we were hit with something right around the same time. Lansing TV and some radio stations are still off the air. Power is back on here. Was only out for about 30 seconds Sounds like what happened in Howell.

Everyone just relax. I just heard this on the radio:
A Niagara-Mowhonk (sp?) substation apparently got overloaded, and dropped off the grid, causing a cascading outage. Something similar (sounds identical, actually) happened back in the 1960's - in the same northeast region.
I would have thought that they would have had measures in place to deal with this sort of thing, since it caused problems in the past. But then, electricity is a funny thing...

Hopefully the rest of the grid stays up. We are going downstreet to the gas station to get 10 gallons gas for our generator, just in case!

Sounds like a terror attack to me, all they have to do is hack into the main power grid computers and overload a few transformers and kapoof... power is out !

I agree.

Utilities aren't all following the rules any more, and they aren't building in adequate transmission or generation reserves any more. That's great for our company! This blackout will generate some nice business for the consultants in the electricity industry. I have to look on the "bright" side. Pun intended.

Why do you think that is? I have no idea but the size of this outage is much more widespread (Detroit, Cleveland, Toledo..etc) than the 65 blackout.
