The bar in my building was open and handing out free beers and all of my neighbors had an informal block party. Power came back on at 3:30 AM, btw.

Actually, one of the better aspects of the subways not running today was the fact that I got a paid day off from work, which I spent sunbathing in a park near my apartment. No complaints here! :-)

Kewl! Glad you didn't have such a terrible day yesterday and glad to see you back here.

We didn't get ours back until about six o'clock this evening.

It was very frustrating. You could see working street lights below 77th St., and you'd keep thinking "We must be next!", but hours went by...

I passed several restaurants in the area with the power on, and all they seemed to be serving was salads and booze. Nobody's got anything in the way of protein to sell (I certainly hope they find a way to supply the grocery stores this weekend).

I'm having tomatoes for dinner.

Thanks for the pings. I haven't been able to read them till now. As posted on the NYS board:

Power finally came back on the Upper East Side above 77th St. at 6:00pm

I was quite chagrined to walk around today and see power restored South of here, North of here and west of here.

When I got home from work yesterday, I made sure my elderly aunt was OK (She had just returned from shopping when it hit. If she was 10 minutes later, she would have been stranded downstairs)

After I filled up every pot in the house with water, checked my ramen noodle supply, and opened the windows, there was nothing to do but go out drinking. Only took me 5 blocks to find a place with a backup generator.

I used a small pocket knife to cut my pant legs off for the walk home (7 miles) and a small keychain LED to find my way around the house- both items found in the NRA catalog for under 20$ each. Membership has it's priveledges. (sp)

We burned my baptismal candles last night, not quite the holy occasion that one would ideally put blessed candles to use, but that's OK.

You'd be surprised how refreshed one can get taking a mock shower with 2 pots of water and a washcloth.

Work tommorrow has been cancelled (Yee hah)

Ah! We're in the same neighborhood. Thought you were downtown.

Nah, That's just where I do my boozing
Provided the trains are running...

Tonight I might have to stay local or ride my bike downtown to get my slant on.

Hey, I finally went up an hour ago (Sty Town). Still no water.

What about you?

This would have been a great thread to be on last night, if only I'd had electricity. (sob!)

Got the electricity back at 5:45 a.m., but lost phone service at 8:20 a.m. RCN sucks in a major way.

So did you flee to midtown and bask in the air conditioning?

I spent all morning riding around on my wife's bike (w/basket and kids seat) securing water and such. Second time, my daughter hopped on the seat she's way too big for and had a mad adventure tootling around the East Village.

We had votives in the stairwells, and are still running down for more water, just in case.

As does MCI. We still have no long distance.

Then again, they're Democrook contributors, so I shouldn't be surprised.

Our RCN cable is up.

Yes, my RCN cable is up and I had to reboot my RCN cable modem at 6 a.m., but the damn phone went out at 8:20 this morning and they can't even be bothered to show up here. A whole high-rise is out of service and they just don't give a clinton.

No, I just went down around 72nd St. for a while. Looking for an open branch of my bank and some groceries.

No luck with either one, but I did get to spend a little time in airconditioning.

The Freepers kept vigil for quite a while last night. Everybody sending out prayers and cool, not warm, thoughts for those affected by the outages. heh

Hope they get you back up soon. And groceries to the stores too.

I seem to remember 7 blocks east/west or 20 blocks north/south. (The blocks are rectangles: except those near Broadway).

Yes, it was more of an incovenience than anything else for me, but for others it was a nightmare.
Thanks for your concern.

Yes, it sure was good to get home. I was in the house all day. The building I work in downtown still has no power.
McCheesey acts like he's president.(wishful thinking maybe?)
I didn't have the pleasure of seeing him on TV, but for some reason, that doesn't disappoint me.
