I was out running errands when this happened. Power went out only for a few seconds in these CT towns: Windsor Locks, Granby, E. Granby (northern CT) and all over the Hartford area. I'm sure many other CT towns were affected... this just happens to be where I was today.
I hope and pray none of our NYC FReeper FRiends are stuck in a dark subway right now...
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent miscellaneous ping list.

It's possible, that's all I'm saying. But this is unprecedented and that's why I wonder ?

Very good point. They will have a hard time even getting to the places where they are needed.

No, during the live Iraq War threads we got up in the 4,000 to 6,000 post range many days.

I wonder why it didn't bring down the power all over the D.C. area.Just glad it didn't.
They are asking the rest of the east coast to conserve energy tonight just in case we have to loan some to New York.

Nobody knows where the power failure originated. The press not knowing is not the same as 'nobody knows'. Lots of people know. It's the presses job to find them and get them on record.
And praying for people's safety is fine, but 'frightened 'victims'' is just a tad over the top.

Thanks for the explanation. I was pretty young during the blackout in 1977, but I think there had been some debate about "insulating" sections of the grid from one another and building better backups into the system. If it's feasible, we might ought to consider having smaller, more independent, power grids.

Nothing like that blow of stinky hot air on a platform as a train arrives in mid-August.Yeah, it was better before they airconditioned all of the cars.
Now all of the heat from the cars gets expelled into the tunnels and platforms.
Its like Iraq down there in August.

funny, an FAA spokesman on KABC radio right now said planes would be allowed to land at the affected airports, but no takeoffs. flights are leaving the west coast for east coast destinations.
To: Joe Hadenuf
NYC airports still shut down......Looks like they have a good number of alternative landing sites with Phillie, Pittsburgh, Boston.

Speculating about possibilities is not fear mongering.
Ignoring and pretending that certain things, like terrorism are NOT even possibilities without ANY information to support the reason for ignoring those as possibilities, is like sticking your head in the sand, because that makes you more comfortable.
I guess some people can't discuss possibilities and what may point to one reason or another without going into abject panic, or something.
To: FairOpinion
CNN said FBI is suspicious about the way it happened. How irresponsible is that? Must be a former FBI agent.
If terrorists don't know how our grids and systems work, this must be a very educational event on how to disable our economy.
