Everything is fine in central Texas, so far. Texas used to be isolated from the national grid, for political reasons rather than technical reasons.
I don't know if that is still true.

I don't want to conclusions, and I know for a fact if you get a transformer hot enough it will expode with great force. Aren't the power grids on the east coast around New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and parts of eastern Canada connected?

I'm happy to report that West Virginia is doing just fine, power-wise. *cranks up AC*

Hearing reports off all subways dead in the water, at a standstill. Many cellphones are jammed......

Tim Richmond from Detroit on and he says that even their back up went out...You couldn't pay me to live in Detroit even when the power is on. This could get ugly...
We had a power slow down if you want to call it that. My office desk fan went from high to barely on and the lights dimmed for about 10 seconds, then everything popped back up.
I'm in southwest Michigan.

Heard it too, shouldn't have been affected by power - thought they had back-ups for the phones after emergency planning post 911

I think Chicago, Milwaukee, et al. are on different national grids. I'm fine here in Madison, but we've got our own electric co.

Okay in Chicago ... we wait... If your in Chicago...you're pretty well doomed anyway.....what am I saying...I'm wasting away in Jersey!!!

Subways downs as well.
I don't know where the powerplant is, am not familiar with NY, was just relating what I heard on TV.
They mentioned the fire at ConEd at 14th street, that's all. There were no follow up reporting about it.
Even with a fire in one powerplant location, this sounds like too large an area to be affected just from that one fire.
