Hannity station went dead for about 20 seconds. Said he had never seen anything like it.

I hope that report is either wrong, or he changes his mind. Rightly or wrongly, if he continues with the fundraiser but doesn't speak, at least briefly, on the blackout, he'll be skewered by the media. If he thought this was terrorism he will be out to talk to the public.
My guess is that they are going to gather more information before any real comments are made from Bush

Dan Rather and Bill Plante on CBS Evening News right now fretting about President Bush "going on with" fundraiser in CA tonight while people in the Northeast "are going through this."
Gee, didn't take long for the media to find a way to attack Bush with this.
To: Diddle E. Squat
Agreed. Bush will be utterly blasted in the media for having attended a million-dollar fundraiser in CA. during this crisis. Dan Blather is already making a bit of it. But so far Bush's men say that is indeed the President's plan for tonight.

On ABC News: Specialist saying Homeland Security said terrorists threatened to affect electricity in August. Specialist is saying that three separate software packages designed to prevent this very thing have obviously failed.I don't trust the DHS when it comes to anything having to do with computers (not just because they chose to use Windows everywhere either), nor do I trust any software to be %100 secure or bug-free. I wouldn't be surprised if some worm/etc. does serious damage, including damage it was never meant to do (remember the first worm back in the 1980s which brought down large portions of the internet).
Has anybody in this thread brought up the issue of whether or not this is the beginnings of S-K-Y-N-E-T becoming active? Arnold is running for governor, but perhaps he can pop over and do something about it.

It sounds like PA wasn't greatly affected? Just Niagra Mohawk/NYSEG customers?
To: FairOpinion
We heard that FBI "natural occurrence" thing too.
To: Fraulein
I can't believe Bush would allow these states to announce States Of Emergency while he's fundraising and not respond in someway.
I heard that if he speaks at all it will be during his fundraiser.

I suspect that every small, localized power outage will be reported. Pretty much anything that happens now is probably unrelated, given that the grid re-acheived equallibrium shortly after the cascading event. I was concerned that as they brought power back they could spark another cascade. I don't understand very much about how this works.
Hope things go well in NY, Detroit and Cleveland tonight. I can't imagine the panic the Ny-ers felt when the power went out. Scary stuff.

"ABC: federal government and electric regulatory commission very worried about cyber security and we will need computer forensic experts to determine why the three software packages failed. Expert feels it's ridiculous to say it's definitely not terrorism." ---
Finally some people with some sense.
To: FairOpinion
speaking on condition of anonymityAnd we know how reliable that source has been. Well, at least one can count on the anonymous source saying something anti-Bush Admin.

The state of emergency report came out of CNN.
TV just went dead on the west coast for 3 seconds.
To: Fraulein
Wow...pretty bold move.

Thank prairiebreeze too, she put to idea in my head.

Ridiculous isn't it? What's Bush going to do? He can't "do" anything about it.
If I was him I'd release a statement that said "well, since I'm so stupid according to the mainstream press, I obviously don't understand the problem so I'll punt the issue to those that do"!

The specialist on ABC mentioned the worm currently on the internet and said it's a possibility it played a part in the failure of the 3 software packages that were designed to prevent this sort of problem.
Said forensic cyber specialists would need a couple of weeks to determine why it happened.
