Paintball Pranksters Get Gunfire

PITTSBURGH-August 13, 2003

Two teens who drove around Pittsburgh shooting passers-by with paintball guns were shot with real bullets for apparently targeting the wrong group, police said.

Tracey Smedley, 19, was treated at UPMC Presbyterian hospital's emergency room and released Tuesday, said spokeswoman Jocelyn Uhl. She could not provide a condition for an unidentified 17-year-old.

Smedley, the 17-year-old and an 18-year-old man drove around a city neighborhood armed with paintball guns and wearing helmets and paintball vests, Pittsburgh police Lt. Philip Dacey said.

During their drive, the teens pelted children at a playground and shot at another group down the street, Dacey said.

When the teens turned around to tell the group on the street they were only shooting paintballs, someone returned fire with a gun, peppering the driver's side of the car with more than a dozen bullets, Dacey said.

Smedley was shot in the left arm, while the 17-year-old was hit in the buttocks. The teens then drove themselves to the hospital, Dacey said.

Can borrow a line from FOX's new show "The OC" where the lead guy is being beat up on the beach to the taunts of "That's how we do it in the OC" and change it to a gangsta with his gun turned sidewides shooting at a paintballer saying "That's how we do it in The Burgh"

Paintball Prank Draws Gunfire In Retaliation

POSTED: 8:14 a.m. EDT August 13, 2003
UPDATED: 11:32 a.m. EDT August 13, 2003

Two teens who drove around the city shooting people with paintballs were wounded by return fire with real bullets, police told WTAE's Shannon Perrine.

paintballs, gun

A 19-year-old was treated at West Penn Hospital and released Tuesday. An unidentified 17-year-old was also admitted, but no information on that person's condition is available.

The two teens and an 18-year-old had been driving around Pittsburgh's Garfield section armed with paintball guns, Pittsburgh police Lt. Philip Dacey said.

The teens allegedly fired at houses near the intersection of Broad and Winebiddle streets, Dacey said. When they passed by again, someone shot up the driver's side of their car with more than a dozen bullets from what appears to be a semiautomatic gun.

"It looks like they picked the wrong area," Dacey said of the teens.

The 19-year-old was hit in the left arm, while the 17-year-old was hit in the buttocks. They drove themselves to the hospital.

Police said they found a small amount of heroin on one alleged paintballer and a rock of crack on the other. They will face possession charges, and possibly a summary offense for allegedly having a loaded paintball gun.

The other shooters are still at large.

"bullets can go thru a car door.... "

Yeah, that trick of hiding behind a car door really only works in the movies. Especially if the shooter is close.

But, reality is a harsh mistress. They're lucky to have survived their first encounter with her.

Yes, but these kids earned more than "honorable mention" in the Darwin Awards. They must be beside themselves.

Actually in this case I do believe "If ya kill them, won't learn nuthin'".

I highly suspect drive-by paintballing is off the agenda, at least for a short while.

"Police said they found a small amount of heroin on one alleged paintballer and a rock of crack on the other"

Yeah, but if we LEGALIZE these drugs and TAX them, all of our problems will go away!
