For anyone who wants to start homeschooling

It is that time of the year again to decided if you are going to send your child off to public school, or if you are going to take the leap and homeschool. I wanted to start a thread to offer you support and perhaps answer some of your questions about homeschooling by freepers who do homeschool.

Post questions , answers and links helpful to new homeschoolers or curious parents who just want more info about homeschooling.

Thank you! I love having more resources. I don't know any other Catholic homeschoolers in the area, but I am joining the local homeschooling group next week, so who knows who I might meet :)

The Lepperts, who publish The Link, also put on kid-friendly Homeschooling Conferences in various locations every year. I went to one and am still using information learned and materials obtained at the Conference.

Not to scare anyone away from homeschooling, but I'm dead tired. I'm teaching American History to the Junior High students this year in our co-op and it's kicking my butt. I have to study all day tomorrow after church. Hope you are having a good weekend. This mom needs some zzzzzzzz's.

Seton Home Study School

It's the most popular Catholic homeschooling curriculum. It runs about $500 per child per year. The orthodox curriculum is suffused with the faith. Highly recommended.

I would like to be involved in the chat room. I have run into some pretty nasty liberal e-mail loops. HAve any of the rest of you experienced increased interest about homeschooling from your friends and people you meet out on the street? I spent somuch time last week giving links and advice on how to start homeschooling. I had five people I knew and a couple that i did not , looking for advice on how to start. I think it is great! I should just consolodate my info and have hand outs ready.

I view myself as a revolutionary

A little over 100 years ago, compulsory government education was regarded as revolutionary, and was often resisted by force. Massachusetts was the first state to implement compulsory attendance laws. Barnstable County, Massachusetts was the last county to "fall,'' and the militia was called in to force the children into the newly created government schools at gunpoint.

"Our form of compulsory schooling is an invention of the state of Massachusetts around 1850. It was resisted - sometimes with guns - by an estimated eighty per cent of the Massachusetts population, the last outpost in Barnstable on Cape Cod not surrendering its children until the 1880's when the area was seized by militia and children marched to school under guard."
