I just learned that google has implemented a calculator as part of their feature set. "Big deal," you might say, but one capability that I found very useful is its ability to convert units. Try entering "100 pints in gallons" (don't put quotes around it when entering it), or "5000 kilometers in furlongs". Very cool, at least to me. I can't tell you how often I have to do those pesky "angstroms <--> parsecs" conversions (ok, I jest, but it will do "100 degrees fahrenheit to celsius," which definitely IS useful). It can also do ordinary math, of course, for those occasions when you just want to dash off a quick calculation.

Very Cool:
10 c in leagues per kilosecond
gives
10 * the speed of light = 539 583 258 leagues per kilosecond
130 Calories in keV
gives
130 kilocalories = 3.394 881 98 × 10^21 kiloelectron volts
1 troy ounce in amu
gives
1 troy ounce = 1.873 096 36 × 10^25 atomic mass units
1 pennyweight in carats
gives
1 pennyweight = 7.775 869 2 carats
Pretty Cool. But I did manage to stump it:
1 clove in grams.
The answer should be 3,175.14659 grams but I just got a search. BTW, One clove = 7 pounds = 1/2 stone.

In my fraternity, we would have the pledges compute the speed of light in furlongs/fortnight, and the capacity of our milk pitcher in cubic parsecs. Yes, we were engineering geeks.

Who needs a calculator. Here is how to convert celsius to fahrenheit in your head. Take 25 degrees c as an example. First double the number to 50. Now take off 10% to 45. Add 32 and you have 77 degrees f. Very simple done in your head without the use of google.

What is it about furlongs/fortnight? I hadn't seen your message, but it was the first conversion I tried.

Hey that is nifty. Ace Hardware has a great little book they sell at the counter with tons of that kind of data, but of course with that you have to do the math yourself. Consider this nugget of information stored.
