In a shocking security breach at JFK Airport, three teens wandered around an active runway - and were so under the radar that they had to turn themselves in to Port Authority cops, it was revealed yesterday.
The incident began shortly after Joel Phagoo, his kid brother and a cousin launched an inflatable raft to go fishing in Jamaica Bay near the airport, WABC-TV reported last night. When the weather turned bad, the raft drifted toward JFK.

There are, however, systems available that can be mounted on the aircraft to counter MANPADS or even air-launched missiles. They are quite expensive so don't expect to see them until AFTER a plane is hit by a missile.
Saving money is more important to the CEO types that run these things(versus human lives), what they fail to understand is if it does happen, not only will they be out of a job(Airline industry will die overnight), they will have millions of Americans out to remove them from the planet they were born on.
Sorry, I for one refuse to believe that terrorists are going to have the sophisticated weapons that all the "chicken littles" keep crying about, not even firearms. They will accomplish their goals with the simpliest of tools & the simplest of means. They will take their time, they will infiltrate & gain the trust of their friends & neighbors. They have no deadlines.
If you want to be afraid of something, be afraid of this internet mobbing craze thing. Imagine 300+ people converging on a location, like an airport or shopping mall, with intent to do harm.........
Stay Safe !
I must disagree with the above statement. Even in these "secure" times it is all too easy to get a MANPAD into this country and use it against a commerical airliner.
I do, however, strongly agree with your assessment that a roll of quarters, or a handfull of nuts and bolts, or even a box of BBs, correctly placed, could bring down an aircraft. I've seen just one loose bolt FOD out an engine and bring down a multi-million dollar fighter. I CAN happen.
I couldn't agree more. I hope Americans wake up and smell the coffee before it's too late.
WE ARE AT WAR FOR OUR SURVIVAL!
It's us against them, and they cannot be allowed to win.
Oh, it would be terribly simple for someone with money to get his hands on a missile in our country. No need to try to sneak it in.
But it would be easy to slip it in as well. How much cocaine slips past the ATF? A small fraction? Most? Practically all? The infrastructure already exists for sneaking contraband into our country. Those Colombian drug guys have all kinds of stuff. Remember when they found the submarine one of the drug lords had bought? I'm pretty sure if they wanted to get a SAM missile into the country it would be a piece of cake for them.
It's true, some gave all and we'll "Never Forget".
Our current Troops and our Veterans though still gave and deserve thanks and appreciation for their service no matter their role.
Sincerly, Thank you.
Not a very effective anti-aircraft weapon. Rate of fire is WAAYYY too low, and it's too big to easily tote around town.
Sorry, should have closed my sarcasm tag (/sarcasm) on that one. I was making light of the VPC and other Brady Bunchers attempts to ban the 50s on the basis of potential aircraft shoot-downs.
BTW, you are absolutely right.
Don't know if you've seen this thread yet:
British National nabbed for trying to smuggle missile into NYC
Geeze, these kids floated across on a raft. That's rather simple if you ask me.
Why bother with a SAM when you could have suicide bombers walk into the terminal after floating over to the airport like these kids did?
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent miscellaneous ping list.

What you don't realise is that this was set up. An idiot was trolling for a missle, the authorities were notified and it was allowed to progress for two reasons; to catch all the perps involved, and to create a display for the media. Fact is that there have been attempts in the past to do the same thing, all our Stingers and similar missles have transponders built into them, they can track their whereabouts. I wouldn't be surprised if they now have a remote means to disable them like they do for handheld GPS units and for most of the sensitive computers in military use. As for foreign made SAM's, can't say about the transponders. But the mode of operation for the terrorists is low profile, they won't be looking to smuggle a missle, they are more likely to use the simplest means available to them. Imagine a SUV filled a dozen containers of gasoline. Would you questionan Arab man at the Home Depot/Walmart/Hardware store buying two 5 gal gas cans? A quick trip around town and he has all he needs and his cost is around $100. Be vigilent, expect the unexpected.
