Memphis Bishop (Don Johnson) tearfully apologizes to homosexual members of church

Memphis Episcopal Bishop Don Johnson has apologized to gay and lesbian members of the West Tennessee diocese as he explained his vote against the denomination's first openly gay bishop.

At a meeting last night at Grace-St. Luke's, Johnson stood crying and said in voting against the election of V. Gene Robinson, he didn't mean to reject gay members of the church.

Johnson was among 43 bishops who voted against the election of Robinson to lead the New Hampshire diocese. They were the minority.

Johnson says he voted "no" because the church hadn't done the theological study needed for it and because the worldwide Anglican Communion will be strained by it.

Most people who came to listen chose not to comment, saying they hadn't yet decided the issue for themselves or weren't comfortable talking about their feelings.

Those who did comment generally upheld the denomination's decision.

Justin Tisdale listened to Johnson, then said Robinson's sexual orientation should make no difference in his church leadership role.

The people who agree with his elevation are welcome his appointment with open arms. I know that when he has his day of judgement, he will have to account for his actions, and the consequences will not be positve or comforting.

I feel rotten for the conservative members of the church that are having a crisis of conscious on where their road lies. I hope they leave the situation that confronts them as to save their salvation rather than follow the false prophets.

I left the Episcopal church a long time ago and my parents thought I was making a terible mistake but I see now that I did the right thing. I have never seen such a bunch of spineless bishops and priests who can come up with more excuses than there are fish in the sea for violating the word of God.

Writing on his Crosswalk.com weblog, Mohler noted that Anglicans affirmed traditional Christian teachings on homosexuality in 1998 during the most recent meeting of the Lambeth Conference -- the once-a-decade meeting of worldwide bishops. A non-binding resolution rejecting the blessing of same-sex unions as well as the ordination of priests involved in same-sex relationships was passed at the conference. The Lambeth resolution even stated that homosexuality is "incompatible with Scripture." It passed overwhelmingly, 526-70.

These are no longer churches. In rejecting the clear teachings from God-breathed scripture, they have become social gathering places for those who would choose to follow perversion. Might as well put up neon signs declaring themselves as Gay Bars!
