With one day left for candidates to qualify for the Oct. 7 recall election, former Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth said Friday he would run, while actor Arnold Schwarzenegger picked up the help of former Gov. Pete Wilson and a nod from President Bush.

Arnold doesn't have the luxury of my vote. He should withdraw so that he doesn't siphon votes from McClintock.
Really, I'm not buying into Arnold's "inevitability" factor, I think Hugh's just trying jump on the early bandwagon.
This is the politics of personality, and it is the problem, not the solution.
A vote for Simon, or McClintock or Ueberroth is a vote for THIS guy:
Go ahead make my day. If Bustamente were elected, it would ultimately devatate the DemocRATS both in California and nationally. Three years of Bustamente could insure a generation of Republican governors.
Hey, wait a minute, that's an idea. You could run the performance artist formerly known as Prince. He's about as well known as Aaaaaaahnold, doesn't just talk a good game on homosexuality but used to be a teen-aged male prostitute (no one else could get that vote for the California RINOs) and you could get Gloria Allred to be counsel to the campaign. Her husband could run fundraisers at his abortion mills by donating, say, 30% of the blood money to the campaign. That would show Muffy and Skipper who's REALLY progressive on social issues. Dykes on Bikes would be happy to provide entertainment at the rallies. You won't have to worry about any of that boring old western civilization or morality in a PAFNA Prince campaign AND he is every bit as Republican as Aaaaaaaahnold without being related to Ted Kennedy.
I know what Aaaaaahnold's campaign is REALLY all about. He has a post-defeat film planned to be produced by Warren Beatty, starring Aaaaaaahnold as a mind-numbed and therefore socially left-wing robot who gets into this race and manages to gull all the GOP suckers into voting for him because they are sooooooo hungry to protect Muffy and Skipper's trust funds that anyone (but a Republican who is pro-life and pro-gun and pro-marriage of the normal variety and anti-adoption by the lifestyle challenged) will do.
What will they do at Californnia RINO headquarters if actual Republicans ever come back to the state party in force?
I suspect this will be a waste of time...
Exactly. That's why the Dems are running so scared right now. Arnold appeals to their base. The media attack dogs were asking Arnold some pretty specific questions yesterday, questions which concern their base such as "Will you repeal the Family Leave Act?" Arnold dodged every question asked of him. He couldn't answer because he doesn't know. I was embarassed for him. He is all style and no substance.

Though movie star and former all-star bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger is reminiscent of another actor who ran for governor of California with little electoral experience Ronald Reagan judging from his ideological resume, "The Terminator," politically, is no "Gipper."
"This guy may be the next actor elected governor of California, but that's where the similarity between him and 'Ronaldus Magnus' end," said radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh.
"Here me now and believe me later, my friends: all these conservative orgasms over Arnold Schwarzenegger are like the 'Gorbasms' liberals experienced over Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev fake. I know that 'R' next to Schwarzenegger's name excites the White House, but his own words prove he's not a conservative. I call this 'The Hollywood Syndrome,' and it happens every time some actor-type says anything even remotely conservative. I'm not trying to cold shower anybody here, but don't look to anyone in Hollywood to validate your political ideas."
Schwarzenegger announced this week he would throw his hat in the ring in hopes of replacing Gov. Gray Davis, who faces a statewide recall election Oct. 7.
Schwarzenegger in the first "Terminator" movie.
"I decided that California is in a disastrous situation right now," he said on "The Tonight Show" Wednesday, after announcing he would run for governor. The state is running a $38 billion deficit, but a budget worked out by the Democrat-controlled Legislature and Gov. Davis' office pushes most of that debt to outlying years.
It's a debt that will be a huge challenge for any new chief executive to solve, but Schwarzenegger remains confident, despite being a political novice.
"The politicians are fiddling, fumbling and failing. And the man failing more than anyone is Gray Davis," Schwarzenegger told "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno. "He is failing them terribly, and this is why he needs to be recalled, and this is why I am going to run for governor."
Tough political talk, to be sure, but what it will mean in terms of policy and governance could resemble the Davis administration in a number of ways.
First, Schwarzenegger describes himself as a political moderate rather than a stalwart conservative; on social issues, he says he's "very liberal." For instance, he has said he supports abortion, backs adoption by homosexuals and approves of some gun-control measures.
His most notable political accomplishment to date is the successful funding and championing of California Proposition 49, a statewide ballot that passed by a wide margin in November. The initiative calls for dedicating up to $550 million annually for before- and after-school programs, an education issue traditionally viewed as within the domain of liberal Democrats.
"We want to make sure children aren't left without any books. We want to make sure our children have the books, that they have a place in the castle. We want to make sure that their mothers have affordable day care," Schwarzenegger said in announcing his decision to run against Davis.
While he did head up President George H. W. Bush's Council on Physical Fitness, his marriage to Maria Schriver daughter of Eunice Kennedy Shriver and former vice presidential candidate Sargent Shriver is worrying GOP conservatives that leftist political influence is never far away.
When Schwarzenegger considered running against Davis in 2002, he drafted strategists who ran former Republican Gov. Pete Wilson's campaign; Wilson was not known as a conservative.
Some analysts see Schwarzenegger as merely being pragmatic. In California, the most populous state in the union, registered Democrats outnumber Republicans 45 percent to 35 percent. Most political analysts say for a Republican to win there, he or she needs to remain a centrist at best.
And yet, GOP primaries in California tend to favor conservatives. Last year, Dick Mountjoy, president of the conservative California Republican Assembly, told the Associated Press Republican activists would not automatically embrace Schwarzenegger.
"We're very strong in the Constitution, we're very strong in limited government, we believe in family values, that kind of thing, so we're not going to throw all that out the window and take anybody that comes down the pike," he said.
In the March 2002 primary, Republican voters rejected moderate former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan in favor of conservative businessman Bill Simon. Simon went on to lose to Davis; Schwarzenegger was a Riordan supporter.
"For social conservative Republicans, Schwarzenegger is definitely no Ronald Reagan," says an analysis published by LifeSite News. "There are serious reservations about supporting the actor whose views on critical moral issues mirror those of the morally bankrupt Hollywood establishment."
Finally, Schwarzenegger spoke out against the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, noting that he was "ashamed" of Republicans for it.
Conservatives may at least be relieved that Schwarzenegger, born in Austria, is not constitutionally permitted to use the California governor's office as a launching pad for a successful bid for the presidency another way in which he differs from Reagan.
But "The Terminator" has also discussed traditionally "Republican" issues. For instance, he says he wants to bring businesses back to California instead of relying solely on increasing taxes and cutting programs.
"People are always talking about two things raising taxes and cutting programs. I think the third one is bringing business back to California and making California a business-friendly environment," Schwarzenegger said outside the Los Angeles County Registrar's Office yesterday.
"It is very important that we straighten out the mess we are in," he said. "I have a very good agenda. The first and most important thing we have to do is we have to overhaul our economic engine in California. We have to bring back businesses to California and to make sure everyone in California has a great job, a fantastic job."

Here's a cookie, wanna be my friend?!
But I **have** invested a rather large chunk of my life supporting WONDERFUL conservatives here who LOST. :(There are probably MANY OTHERS that we could add to this list, but:
Bruce Herschensohn was a WONDERFUL conservative, and he lost. Can see any kind of pattern here?
Bill Simon was a WONDERFUL conservative, and he lost.
Tom McClintock is a WONDERFUL conservative, and...
Fool me ONCE, shame on you.
Fool me TWICE, same on ME.
Yes, but in politics you have to make deals to get what you want. Arnold will sell out anybody he has to in order to get his pet programs in.
Aaaaaaahnold makes Mayor Moonbeam of Oakland look pretty conservative by comparison. Change the state constitution by initiative so that you can nominate him.
You could move Patricia Ireland to California. She's as Republican as Aaaaaaahnold.
Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden are both available and the election of either would go a long way toward the goal of eliminating the GOP's reputation with airheads as non-inclusive. Beats the heck out of soccer mom nominees!
The Arkansas Antichrist is also between jobs and he is: a political pro, a proven winner in california thanks to the usual gang of RINOs, AND his views on social issues are no worse than Aaaaaahnold's although the AAC is a bit to Aaaaaaaahnold's right on money matters. AND the AAC knows how to answer questions about actual issues which Aaaaaaahnold has yet to do.
Ya really wanna RINO to get a Demonratic Senate seat even only until next fall? Offer the California governorship to Her Satanic Majesty, the Junior Senatething from New York. She will calculate (ohhhhh, will she calculate!) and remember that, other than the Demonrat secular God JFK, no Demonrat and no Democrat has ever been elected president from the Senate and that governorships are where many presidents come from nowadays. Pataki names some modern Charlie Goodell (the political party cross-dresser named by Rockefeller back in 1968 after Sirhan Sirhan's marksmanship). The Demonrats take the seat back in 2004 in the special election but it CANNOT get worse than Mrs. AAC Question: What will you do as governor to deal with the state's fiscal crisis?
Musclehead: It iz clear zu me zat ve need leadership in Zagramendo.
Question: What do you think of Davis tripling the car tax?
Musclehead: It iz very clear zu me zat ve really need new leadership in Zagramendo.
Question: How do you feel about gun confiscation?
Musclehead: Vell, as in many ozzer matterz, ve need bedder leaderzip in Zagramendo. Don't you think?
Question: What was your father doing in World War II?
Musclehead: Vell, ve need.....Ach, zat vun, huh? I do not remember but maybe the National Enquirer or Katie Couric vill help uz recall.
Question: What will you do about conservatives who believe in morality and western civilization
Musclehead: Zat dependz on ze meaning of ze "gonzentrashun Kamp" Zose reactionaries muzt and zey VILL be derminatud! Uncle Teddy (Big Uncle) zhould haff dun zat decades ago. Zat vill be all. Sieg Aaaaaahnold!
