Schwarzenegger on Leno

Schwarzenegger, best known for playing a killer robot in three "Terminator" movies, opened his campaign with a raw display of the extraordinary media platform at his disposal, announcing his candidacy on NBC's "Tonight Show With Jay Leno."

Among those caught off-guard by the announcement was his close friend and another potential candidate, former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan. One of Riordan's closest advisers said the mayor thought he had an understanding that Schwarzenegger would withdraw from the race, easing Riordan's way in.

"So this is what it feels like to be mugged," the adviser said.

Man, this is kinda deceitful considering that he must have given assurances- if you believe the press reports that he was going to announce his support of Rioden.

One RINO ticks another RINO off. Oh, well. That is what you get with liberal republicans.

Drudge must be angry also, since his credibility took another dive.

I heard the exact opposite myself - that Ahhnold talked it over with Riordan.

Looks like the media may already be trying to sow dissent within the GOP ranks.

uh...and why would you believe press reports? because they're known for their factual, unbiased reporting?

maybe it wasn't a 'mutual' understanding. maybe only riordan understood that he would have no competition. In any event, i can't stand riordan--no loss to the republicans

Drudge seemed very angry last night on H & C. He was doing everything to say that Schwarzeneggar has so much scandal in past that he will never win. Drudge better be careful. If he makes too many predictions like that people will look at him like a Dick Morris.

I agree.

I sent Drudge an email yesterday about his endless cynicism (concerning the "mood" of supposed "troops" against the war) Its just another case of Drudge getting too close to his mainstream media buddies like the Washington Post.

If they sow discontent within RINOs that may be enough to assure a conservative (McClintock) victory. There are so many RATs in this one that we've got a real chance with a low turnout.

Arnold said last night on the tonight show that he was in close contact with Riordan the whole time and they had a game going, who is in who is out. I doubt if Arnold told Riordan he wasn't going to run and then doublecrossed. That would just be stupid. What an "aide" knows or doesn't know is irrelevant.

Actually some of Arnold's own people were surprised. He had already furnished them with copies of his decline to run. Then he changed his mind, supposedly. I think Reardan's people may have been stiffed. Doesn't bother me a bit.

I'm starting to think this whole fiasco is a no-lose proposition for the GOP. I think Arnold is the one to beat now, primarily because of the name recog and the huge field. If he wins, the GOP gets the state organization for election '04. If he sucks as governor, most people won't tie him to the party anyway. He's Arnold Schwarzeneggar, not some schmo candidate.

If the Dems win, they're still essentially destroyed organizationally for the next few years. It's been like watching a massive train wreck in slow motion, and someone just hit the FF button.

I read the reports saying he was going to endorse Riordan. Don't know what made him change his mind. Feinstein's withdrawl, probably. If Feistein's withdrawl is the only reason he threw in his hat, then he does NOT have what it takes to be governor of anything.

Very doubtful. Also doubtful that Dick knew he was actually running more than the press. Arnold strikes me as somebody who doesn't let anything (or any friend) get in the way of his ambition.

As for media conspiracies, look for this story to disappear.

I'll bet the guy Schwartzenegger is not all that he is cracked up to be. I can think of four specific cases where an uninformed and naive voting public ran after 'star'-type personages as preferable over politician, just because they were fed up with politics--and they ended up getting themselves in hotter water than before! Caveat Emptor!!

a) Knock Yokoyama -- Governor of Osaka

b) Kenji Aoyama -- Governor of Tokyo

c) Jesse Ventura -- Governor of Minnesota

We'll throw in Ross Perot as someone that had people throwing themselves at his feet as some kind of populist savior, only to really scratch the surface and see the guy really did not have any solutions, just a series of complaints.

If there is a debate, Arnold is going to be defeatedly soundly.

Has Drudge had a real scoop since the "Blue Dress"? I don't understand why he has credibility, he's as off in his stories it seems as Dick Morris is in his predictions! I wish Fox would drop Morris, he's always either gloom & doom or everything's-great, nothing in between.
