BALI, Indonesia (AP) -- In the first verdict on last year's Bali bombings, an Indonesian court on Thursday convicted and sentenced to death Amrozi bin Nurhasyim, a key player in the attack that killed 202 people. Amrozi was found guilty of planning and helping execute the bombings.

"The accused is found guilty in a legal and convincing manner of carrying out an act of terrorism," said judge I Made Karna. After the verdict was read, Amrozi took off his Islamic skull cap, raised his arms and gave his lawyers the thumbs-up sign. Hundreds of people, including survivors of the bombings, cheered when the judge read the sentence.
The verdict came two days after another bomb exploded at the Marriott Hotel in Jakarta, killing at least 10 people and wounding nearly 150. Both attacks have been linked with Jemaah Islamiyah, a shadowy al-Qaida-linked terrorist group believed to be operating in Southeast Asia.
Indonesia's government, which was accused of being soft on terrorists before the Bali blasts, has been eager to show the world that it is committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice. If the Amrozi verdict is followed by similar convictions for other alleged bombers, Indonesia's notoriously inefficient judicial system could get a much needed boost in its efforts to confront Islamic extremism.

No doubt his "associates" will continue their reign of terror, excuse me, "peace", in Indonesia like this week's bombing of the hotel in Jakarta ...

This bombing was just last year. They've already completed a trial and have a sentence.
Any bets on when the US tries the shoebomber? Or how many more years until the DC area snipers see a courtroom?

Asian justice tends to be fairly swift - I've heard of trial, judgement and penalty being fairly and legally rendered in less than 72 hours (that was for a home invasion).
That also includes the "public justice" that's normally applied when a perp is caught red-handed. It's anywhere from 30 minutes to an overnight of public humiliation by the Neighborhood Crime Watch, then they hand 'em over to the police.

The face of Satan incarnate.
These photos were taken as the largely-Aussie audience applauds his death sentence.

Thanks for info.
In the sense of a life for a life, he's getting off easy (in this life, anyhow).

I am all for the death penalty for this scumbag..but could he not "find" his way into the general population and/or shower of the prison..he obviously is in a secluded cell with protection..but it would not hurt my feelings if he was let loose with regular prisoners..he is small and quite the coward..
