Gods and Generals (Vanity)
Posted on 08/04/2003 7:57:58 AM PDT by irish guard
The movie, Gods and Generals is now out on video and I had the pleasure of watching it last night (Mrs. irish guard is not very big on violent movies). I remember from the original post when the movie came out, the character of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson stole the show and I was stunned by the focus on religion and each of the principal character's unabashed expression of their religious faith. The news today is troubling all around; gay marriages and Bishops, priest pedophelia, Muslim violence....all religion related.
I am certain I will be flamed for this post, but it was such a pleasure to learn that these men were so fervently religious....... that there was a time in our history when people could actually hold religious beliefs and not be openly chastised for it.
The Democrats in this country find it perfectly acceptable for millions to hold beliefs contrary to religious ones....gay marriages, abortions, euthanasia, gay bishops, etc, yet, when Rick Santorum or, God forbid, a federal judiciary appointee, or others wish to express their opinions while holding office, the Democrats become apoplectic.
I think the Republicans have the right idea with the "Catholics Need Not Apply" comment. This thing has legs and even if it doesn't, it is the right thing to do and how can you argue with that.
My apologies for the rant and the expression of religious delight over a movie that caught me by surprise.

DVD or video is the only way to see and enjoy this film. I saw it in a theater and it was getting a bit tedious. Then the film broke for the intermission. Most people left and did not return. You are correct about the very religious nature of the characters. My thought at the time was this: Americans today are not fit enough or ethically pure enough or Christian enough to have been in the same room with people who lived during that era.

I know full well that the bishop is Episcopalian and the judge is Catholic. You may know that, but it is amazing the number of people who do not seem to differentiate. I fired an email to Fox & Friends this morning because of a stupid statement that Mancow made -- confusing the two religions and implying that the Episcopalian bishop-to-be was Catholic.

We too saw and enjoyed the video Gods and Generals. It was fantastic! The way those heroic gentlemen and KIDS had to fight that battle would never have been possible without a deep belief in God. They needed the strength and comfort that came from that belief.
As for those who don't like it...tough. We're not asking them to believe (although I think one of these days they are gonna be sorry but...that's another story) ... we're not asking them to believe anything. We're not asking first of all anything from anybody. We will speak of God and our beliefs anytime we want.
It is our right to believe and to openly speak about God just the way others can openly speak about all the other things they believe in that we don't necessarily agree with.
I believe in God and don't think my life would have gone the way it has without the help of someone greater than me. I also believe in the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the Saints as well. It is my right and my faith and it is my faith that has helped me in so many ways throughout my life.
So, don't worry about being flamed. It's YOUR right to say and speak about what you believe or hold dear. You are part of this free country the way we all our and while I don't agree with some of the things the other side says or does...it is their right and so by the same token we also have that right and for those who don't like it it's becuase they only want their side heard.
They must be afraid of God...yes...that's it. They are AFRAID of God.
Gods and Generals. Excellent movie...will watch it again and will buy it as well. Those were brave men and boys who fought those battles and having visited Gettysburg and Fredricksburg...we too felt like we were standing on holy ground where so many lost their lives. We were HONORED to be right there where History was in the making.
God bless their souls and God bless America!!!

Did you not read the first 10 chapters that were left out of the movie.
And Ms.Abernathy's portrayal was of what character from the book?

You are correct about the very religious nature of the characters. If you read the letters and diaries of people in that era, the position of their religion and church is quite clear and repeated over and over again. How many of us will leave a written legacy like that?

Religion CAN'T ne a part of their playbook since abortion, homosexuality, adultery, etc., are expressly forbidden. If they close their eyes real tight, they won't be able to see the Bible; therefore, the Bible doesn't exist. Brilliant. That, at root, is what this is all about. An attempt to escape the clear teaching of God, and the negative sanctions that result from disobeying it.

Wasn't Jim standing and Stonewall Jackson on a horse?

Both sides in the War of the Rebellion felt God was on their side. This is why defeat was so bitter for the South-it was arguably proof that they were wrong and that God favored the North.

Yes I did read the complete book. I hardly ever start a book at the 10th chapter. I still assert the movie follows the book, unlike many other movies, one can actually see the two are telling the same story.

Oh, please...that was not directed at you. Sorry if it came across like that. I meant those who don't like the fact we believe in God. Tough for them. :)

Exactly, perhaps I did not express my observation clear enough.

I saw it this weekend. Stonewall stole the show. Nonetheless, it did tend to drag from time to time. Overall, I'll see it again.

A Bush Judicial appointee is Catholic and the Republicans are trying to suggest the Democrats are anit-Catholic.

According to the Democrat way of thinking, the Gettysburg Address would be unconstitutional reading due to Lincoln's mention of God.
Uh oh! Then so would the "Emancipation Proclomation":
And upon this act, sincerely believed to be an act of justice, warranted by the Constitution upon military necessity, I invoke the considerate judgment of mankind and the gracious favor of Almighty God.

I was perhaps a bit displeased by elbucko's suggestion of idiocy on my part.....
Oh, Geez, you idiot! It was the Catholic Church that came out against "gay marriage". It's the Episcopalians that are going "kwear".

"Uh oh! Then so would the "Emancipation Proclamation":"
Right-to, Doc-Joe. Many of our essential national documents would be forbidden reading in all our public schools, in court, and in our state and federal governmental meetings. Heaven help us!
