I look at it more as these wrongs have gone on for a long time and the Catholic church does not take care of its problems. Where my mom grew up, long time ago, they had no public schools. Catholics sent nuns out as missionaries to teach children. A bunch of nuns made my mother's life miserable, she was physically abused but not sexually. Then she grew up and became a mother and made my life miserable. She never got over what the nuns did to her.

Then there was her mother, my grandmother who boarded nuns during the week, the nuns went back to the parish where the priest was for the weekends. Many of those teaching nuns were repeatedly getting pregnant and everyone in the community knew it. They spent the weekend with the parish priest. The Catholic church knew about it, the nuns went back to Toronto to have their babies, then back to the same parish to teach and get pregnant again. That went on for twenty years, everyone knew about it, you could tell they were pregnant even with the robes, and the church did nothing about it. Left that priest there even after my mother married and moved away. Why? Why is that a good thing?

The kids who are abused, do they ever get over it? Doubtful. Do they ever abuse someone else? Maybe. Hope not.

What will it take to do something about the problem?

It also comes down to personal choice. The lives of the saints are full of stories where lives were horrendous and yet they made personal decisions to be good people.

I still think there is too much of the victimhood mentality.

the Penobscot Indian Nation in Maine

"Penobscot" never seemed like an Indian name to me. If I didn't know better, I would have suggested that they were hoaxsters a la "Krippendorf's Tribe."

So many good things come from the sexually repressed.

Nuns and priests, celibate.

I'm sorry and I am not a basher, but you are inviting those with deviate sexual identities with the mandate.

I think the church has been kidding itself that somehow these folks are of normal psyches.

I believe I am stating the obvious.

"THE DEVILS OF LOUDON " was based on historical fact. Many a weird/disgusting thing went on at that nunnery and not all of the claims were false.

The cash remark is a typical defensive tactic. If you can't deny the story, try to discredit the witness. But HOW do you discredit hundreds and thousands of witnesses??

The archdiocese recently offered a $25.7 million settlement to the more than 200 victims who have previously filed suits

Any organization that intentionally shields massive criminal actions by so many in their employ over a thirty year period is not (in my opinion) doing the Lords' work.
The Catholic Church is in the business of selling a religion they themselves don't believe in.
Cigarette manufacturers were sued for billions and everyone KNEW that the product was harmful. The Catholic Church should be sued for billions and those who covered up should be sent to prison.
Their cries for forgiveness should be taken with the same value as their respect for the laws of our land.
Repentance should come before they ask for forgiveness. What they are truly sorry for is getting caught.

So if celibacy is abnormal then explain why married parents sexually abuse their children?

Denial runs deep.

They have so much emotionally and socially invested in their faith they just can't believe that what gave them strength may have severe internal problems.

Too many of these folks their religion was more than sunday service. It is their schooling, the neighborhood they grew up in, most of their friends and even many of their businesss revolved around church membership.

Yes and yes. Horrible stuff.

After reading " THE DEVILS OF LOUDON " many, many, decades ago now, I did a lot of research about it.There really was such a nunnery ( different name, same time & place, though, and yes, Huxley did change some things )and terrible things, far worse than was in the novel, took place there; according to RC church record.

In a religion, as old and as large as Catholocism, all manner of both good and evil things have and obviously, still do exist within its bounds.

I think it makes the pool of potential applicants so small to pick from and many of those looking for relief or forgivinenss for their deviate personnas make themselves availble for the celibate calling.

Guilty until proven innocent. Is that the way it should be?

Guilty until proven innocent does not make the accuser a liar until he or she is proven correct.

Straw man.

Question: If celibacy was the normal human condition, how would biological human life continue on this planet? Answer: Adult sexuality is the normal human condition. It is celibacy which is deviant.
