Support Fisher House
The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need by providing homes close to a loved one during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

There are currently 31 houses located on the grounds of every major military medical center and several VA medical centers. These houses will play a critical role in caring for casualties from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Donations will be used to help meet the cost of lodging for a family whose loved one was injured in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. There is a limit to the number of families who can stay in a Fisher House and program is committed to help provide lodging for families who must find commercial lodging, because the Fisher House is full.

Good Morning Radix! The Hawaiian Pancakes sound different. It would be interesting to try some.
Good morning to our military and good morning to the whole Canteen crew.

Warm up exercise for today . . . . .

One night, a police officer was stalking out a particularly rowdy bar for possible violations of the driving
under the influence laws. At closing time, he saw a fellow stumble out of the bar, trip on the curb,
and try his keys on five different cars before he found his. Then, sat in the front seat fumbling around
with his keys for several minutes. Everyone left the bar and drove off. Finally, he started his engine
and began to pull away.

The police officer was waiting for him. He stopped the driver, read him his rights and administered the
Breathalyzer test. The results showed a reading of 0.0. The puzzled officer demanded to know how that
could be. The driver replied, "Tonight, I'm the Designated Decoy."

Today's FEEBLE attempt at humor:

A couple was relating their vacation experiences to a friend.

"It sounds as if you had a great time in Texas," the friend observed.

"But didn't you tell me you were planning to visit Colorado?"

"Well," the husband said, "we changed our plans because, uh..."

His wife cut in, "Oh, tell the truth, Fred!"

He fell silent and she continued, "You know, it's just ridiculous.  Fred simply will not ask for directions."

Today's classic warship, USS Cecil J. Doyle (DE-368)

John C. Butler class destroyer escort
Displacement. 1,350 t.
Lenght. 306'
Beam. 36'7"
Draft. 13'4"
Speed. 24 k.
Complement. 186
Armament. 3 5"; 4 40mm; 10 20mm; 3 21" tt.; 8 dcp.; 1 hedgehog.

Cecil J. Doyle (DE-368) was launched 1 July 1944 by Consolidated Steel Corp., Orange, Tex.; sponsored by Mrs. O. P. Doyle; and commissioned 16 October 1944, Lieutenant Commander D. S. Crocker, USNR, in command.

Cecil J. Doyle carried out her first mission while still in shakedown, when she cruised on an air-sea rescue station during the flight of Government officials to the Yalta Conference. On 30 January 1945, she rendezvoused with HMS Ranee, and guarded the escort carrier through the Panama Canal and north to San Diego. Cecil J. Doyle continued on to Pearl Harbor and Eniwetok, where she arrived 28 March to join the Marshalls-Gilbert Patrol and Escort Group. Her escort duties took her to Guam, and Ulithi, where on 30 April she was transferred to the Carolines Surface Patrol and Escort Group. On 2 May, Cecil J. Doyle 's commanding officer became Commander, Screen, Peleliu, protecting the great anchorage in Kossol Roads.

While on patrol, Cecil J. Doyle several times rescued downed aviators, and on 27 May 1945 bombarded a by-passed Japanese garrison on Koror Island.

On 2 August, she was ordered to the rescue of a large group of men in rafts reported at 11°30' N., 133°30' E., and bent on top speed to be the first to reach the survivors of torpedoed Indianapolis (CA-35). It was Cecil J. Doyle's melancholy duty to radio the first report of the cruiser's loss.

HAVE ARREVED AREA X AM PICKING UP SURVIVORS FROM USS INDIANAPOLIS (CA 35) TORPEODED [sic] AND SUNK LAST SUNDAY NIGHT

She rescued 93 survivors, and gave final rites to 21 found already dead. Remaining in the area searching until 8 August, Cecil J. Doyle was the last to leave the scene.

From 26 August 1945, when she sailed into Buckner Bay, Okinawa, the destroyer was assigned to occupation duty. She sailed with hospital ships to Wakayama, Japan, to evacuate released prisoners of war, then screened carriers providing air cover for landing of occupation troops. Through 12 November, she cruised on courier duty between Japanese ports, and after drydocking at Yokosuka, sailed for San Francisco, arriving 13 January 1946. She was decommissioned and placed in reserve at San Diego 2 July 1946.

Stricken from the Navy list on July 1 1967, she was sunk as target off California December 2 1967.

A bone for the Marines (try not to move your lips /cheap-shot)

Marines always faithful to their music
BY SAMANTHA SIEBER
Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service

WASHINGTON - (KRT) - In triumph, tragedy and celebration, the Marines remain always faithful to their organization, country and one another. One group of Marines remains faithful through their gift of music.

From tuba player to piccolo player, they're committed to upholding the idealsof the few and the proud.

On July 11, 1798, President John Adams and Congress established the first military service band to provide music for the nation's leaders. It was President Thomas Jefferson who, in 1801, recognized the relationship between the band and the president and named it "The President's Own."

For 205 years, The President's Own has fulfilled its mission of providing music for the president and the commandant of the Marine Corps.

The band comprises 143 musicians - 40 women - and support personnel from around the country.

Being the oldest service band, The President's Own has high standards for its musicians. To make sure it gets the best musicians, candidates must pass an audition, obtain White House security clearance, and meet the physical and mental standards of the Marine Corps.

The band's audition is similar to a symphony orchestra audition. Col. Tim Foley, director of the band, said there is a "cattle call," meaning musicians wanting to audition for the open position are welcome to compete. About 50 hopefuls audition at one time, but Foley said the number depends on the instrument.

Traditionally there are two rounds of auditions where the musicians play prepared music. The selection committee, composed of band members, chooses the musicians they think are most qualified and can uphold the traditions and customs of the Marine Corps.

Gunnery Sgt. Chris Rose, a six-year percussionist from Atlanta, said compared to other audition processes he has experienced, the Marine Band audition process is very fair and the musicians are given ample time to perform, but he said he does not envy their position.

Rose played for the Houston Symphony, New York City Opera and performed for five years with Andy Williams in Branson, Mo., before joining the Marines.

Band members enlist into the Marines Corps for four years, with duty in the band only. Band members do not undergo basic training, but they do have a monthlong session on military customs and Marine Corps history and traditions.

After a band member serves the initial four years he or she may re-enlist without re-auditioning. Each musician receives the same benefits as others in the Marine Corps. Musicians are enlisted as staff sergeants, allowing the band to give a salary comparable to other music organizations.

Another detail that distinguishes the musicians from other Marines is the dress uniform. The Marine dress uniform is a blue tunic with red trim but the band dress uniform is opposite - red with blue trim. The uniforms date back to 1801 when musicians in Europe wore opposite colors from warriors. Today's uniforms have kept with tradition even though the band has no combat mission.

Though the band's primary mission is to provide music for the president, it also makes public performances. Throughout the year the band performs concerts in the Washington area. In the summer, the band gives public performances on the steps of the Capitol and the Iwo Jima Memorial. There also is a parade held at the Marine Barracks in Washington every Friday night. In the fall the band goes on a seven-week national tour.

Staff Sgt. Chris Clark, a four-year Marine trombonist from Commerce, Texas, said national tours are one of his favorite things because the band is getting to play for people who do not normally hear or see the Marines. He said the best thing about the tours is that in some small towns the band plays in high school gyms where the lights are left on allowing him to see the audience filled with war veterans.

With all of its performances and obligations, the band works 365 days a year. Each member, however, has 30 days of paid leave.

Master Sgt. Peter Wilson, a violinist with the band for 13 years from Morgantown, W.Va., said though it does not happen often, the band will drop any prior commitment to fulfill a need at the White House, their primary mission.

Master Sgt. Betsy Hill, a nine-year flutist from Shepherdstown, W.Va., said sometimes it is hard to make plans but it does not happen often. "Things come in once in a while and you must be flexible and very professional under what is called difficult circumstances," Hill said.

Though it is hectic at times, musicians say it is worth it to be able to do what they love and work with some of the best people in the business.

"Marines are extraordinary people," said Foley, of Berwick, Pa. "The Marines and musicians with all the spirit that goes with that, is what keeps me going."

Thanks for the memories:

LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Airmen around the world mourn the loss of Bob Hope, the only American ever to be made an honorary Veteran of America's Armed Forces. He was 100. In this photo, Hope entertains the troops with a 10-minute monologue in 1990 after a ceremony to rename the Thunderbird Theater here as the Bob Hope Performing Arts Center. The ceremony honored Hope's 50 years of entertaining American armed forces around the world. Hope called the troops his "best friends" and made it his mission to be with them wherever they served, regardless of distance or danger. His final tour, at age 90, took him to the Persian Gulf and the men and women of Operation Desert Storm. (U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt. Michael J. Haggerty)
