FACTS FOR THE LYRICALLY CHALLENGED

If you sing while you are in your car, stuck in traffic, or in the shower, this would include you. (We won't tell!)

Q: Is there a technical name for these mishearances?
A: Well, not a technical name as in psychology terminology, but there is an anecdotal name -- they're called mondegreens, and it's all explained at Mondegreens Ripped My Flesh.

Reader Jim Coleman offers the following on the subject of mondegreens:

This term was coined when an author was referring to hearing "upon the green" as "mondegreen". Malachi McCourt, brother of Frank who wrote Angela's Ashes, titled his autobiography A Monk's Swimmin' which is how the little Irish boys heard the line from the Ave Maria/Hail Mary "blessed are thou amongst women".

Historically, mondegreens help to explain the many different lyrics in similar folk songs. In the old Appalachian ballad, Wildwood Flower, one version has the lines "The myrtle so white and its emerald hue The pale and the leader and islip so blue"

while another has

"The myrtle so white and its emerald hue The pale amanita and eyes look so blue."

Amanita is a deadly poisonous mushroom, hardly something for a love lyric.

Sometimes, the mondegreens are intentional. On the John Laroquette show in which he played a bus station manager, there were two cops, one a short woman and the other a rotund middle aged man. The woman once stated that her partner was so food obsessed that he thought the line to the Crystal Gayle song was "Donuts make your brown eyes blue."
---from kissthisguy.com (Link 2 on the left hand side)

Q: I don't have issues with lyrics.
A: Probably the most misheard lyrics are actually children's songs. Remember the songs from "Mary Poppins"? This is the earliest memory that most of us have of singing songs. So? If you are unable to sing the lyrics correctly, blame your parents and music teacher. They are usually the individuals most responsible for lyrically challenged behavior. No! There is nothing wrong with mishearing the lyrics of any Barney song. They aren't meant to be sung. They are there to annoy the hell out of you. So? Avoid Barney songs!

Q: My lyrics are better than the original? Who can I complain to about it and can I get royalties for it?
A. Your mama! Complain to her. She's the only one that cares! Maybe she'll give you a quarter unless you've wasted her time.

Q: Am I alone? I feel so embarrassed that I sing songs incorrectly. Is there a group out there for people like me?
A: Absolutely! The biggest group is PALK which stands for Proudly Anonymous Lyric Killers.  If you'd like to become a member, please send a check for a million dollars to MoJo2001. She'll help you locate the group.
(Most of this stuff is just made up! So? Don't take it seriously!)

The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need by providing homes close to a loved one during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

There are currently 31 houses located on the grounds of every major military medical center and several VA medical centers. These houses will play a critical role in caring for casualties from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Donations will be used to help meet the cost of lodging for a family whose loved one was injured in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. There is a limit to the number of families who can stay in a Fisher House and program is committed to help provide lodging for families who must find commercial lodging, because the Fisher House is full.

Today's classic warship, USS Geranium

USS Geranium, a 224-ton side-wheel steamer, was built at Newburgh, New York, in 1863 as the civilian vessel John A. Dix. She was purchased by the Navy in September 1863 and commissioned in mid-October as USS Geranium for service as a tug. Assigned to the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, she was used as a picket boat, dispatch vessel and transport in the coastal waters of northern Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Among her activities during this time were participation in an expedition on the Stono and North Edisto Rivers, S.C., in July 1864 and in the amphibious landing at Bull's Bay, S.C., in February 1865. Geranium left South Carolina in June 1865 and was decommissioned at Washington, D.C., in July. She was sold to the Treasury Department in October 1865 and became a light house tender with no change in name. After over four decades of service supporting the Nation's aids to navigation USLHT Geranium was sold in 1910.
