Silicone Implants Reconsidered; Some Say FDA Is Moving Too Fast
Washington Post ^ | 21 JUL 2003 | Marc Kaufman, Washington Post Staff Writer

After more than a decade of sharply restricted sales because of health concerns, silicone gel breast implants are poised for an unusual return to the market. The Food and Drug Administration is reviewing an application to approve the controversial devices, and close observers believe it will rule on the subject this year.

The National Organization for Women and the consumer group Public Citizen fear that the FDA is moving too fast, and will call today for the agency to slow considerably its review process. They say that the long-term studies needed to determine whether there is a health risk from silicone gel have not yet been done, and that some scientists remain concerned about serious health consequences.

From what I have heard, I think a lot of this damage is done by people who do the mammography exams. I am told (I'm a dude who just admires boobs ... I have only my wife's natural ones to play with) that the technicians ask if the woman has implants; and if the answer is yes .... woe to the poor woman. The plates are tightened such that the camera can 'shoot' though the flesh and implant. Judging from various MD's I have talked to, the general consensus is that if the implants are going to burst, the exam is a good candidate for root cause. Most people are just not that rough on the implants. And the implants are designed to take impacts (ie. falling, bumping into furnature and rough 'play').

DOW Corning has paid gazillions of dollars to women who had Si implants, and then sued for real or imagined medical problems. After bankrupting several companies, the new studies showed that the number of women who had acquired immuniodeficiences after the implants, was practically identical to the number of women in the control group. Silicone does not chemically react with much of anything at temperatures that a LIVING human would experience. Now, during cremation .... well, that's a different story..

Corporate Greed....Also, as you're probably aware, Dow is responsible for the illnesses to our military that was in Nam, Desert Storm...Interesting how those people suffer from similar, if not the same type of illnesses...Research it...and yet the govt is sticking it up these people's butts.

The $ they're going to pay out is NOT to the same women that were paid before....this payment is to women who haven't been pd and won't be nearly a fraction that's truly due them...Dow=Corporate Greed..

Sorry untrue. You are correct in that those woman who have settled with dow will not receive anymore. But those who haven't and have already received large settlements are set to receive again. I KNOW what I'm talking about, I can give you the lawyers handling the case (if you want the name I can bring it tomorrow. I'm at work) and you can call or write to them and find out. It will happen within 2 years.

Study show the do cause disease and sickness

Actually no good quality, large number of subjects studies show that.

Sure, the companies have paid zillions of dollars in liability, but so has McDonald's for foolish people who forget coffee is hot. Your evidence is anecdotal and hysterical.

Maybe you should post a few pix of these implants after they've been removed from the women, and also pix of how their bodies are disformed

I was actually considering getting implants up until about a month ago. That was actually my determining factor, what would I look like if I had to have them removed for, say, medical reasons or something. I learned in my research that in all breast augmentation surgeries some of the natural breast tissue is removed.

That, and I saw the before photos and figured I wasn't doing too bad and should just leave well enough alone.

Right, but it is difficult to convince the hysterics with objective data. Maybe impossible.

One danger of silicone implants is that it makes mammograms more difficult for the radiologist to read and find early breast cancer, but that is not an adverse effect of the silicone.

so what? Are you aware that Silicone is used SPECIFICALLY because it is so chemically enert that it will only oxidize at temperatures that will not only kill you, but will melt your bones? Silicone is enert, that's why it was used. In the human body, silicone is used for internal organ replacements (ie. lung tissue is removed, and a silicone replacement is installed to prevent the internal organs from becoming displaced), knees and joints as well as artifical cartiledge. These people are not developing sicknesses at any higher rate than the general population.

That's correct...and the silicone continues to eat away at any tissue even following any mastopexy or if they had to form you new breasts due to the silcone eating the original tissue...you would be concave, and am sure you wouldn't want to look that way...and on top of it, sicker than hell.

true, people can sue over anything. If anything ever deserved it, it was the silicone implant doctors and corporations. What they do to woman is hideous (I know they ask for it). When it's over Dow, and the others will have paid plenty.

By the way... Dow isn't the only one named in this suit. I can't remember the others, I'll try and bring that as well.

That's incorrect..Why is the FDA covering it up? Why have these companies ran the scientists out of their businesses?? Greed...and there's many women who honestly havent' put it together why they're ill and attribute whatever to normal signs of aging, like so many did.
