[history]
July 21, 2003 -- LAST Wednesday, there was a mob scene in Otto Tootsi Plohound store in SoHo - literally. One minute, there were a handful of shoppers browsing the spacious Italian footwear shop at the corner of Lafayette and Prince streets - the next, hundreds of people were swarming in the door, milling about like a hive of caffeinated bees.

The following is from the New York Post (sorry no link) either from yesterday or Saturday:
SMOKE-IN ANYONE fed up with Mayor "Tali-Ban" Bloomberg's costly and capricious smoking prohibition should head to City Hall Park on Thursday at 1 p.m. Citing the fact that hundreds of small businesses and thousands of employees face financial ruin while billionaire Bloomberg jets off to island retreats every weekend, the victims of his Draconian rule will rally to "Can the Ban." At the risk of suffering Bloomberg's selective enforcement, the New York Nightlife Association, the Empire State Restaurant and Tavern Association and other groups are lending their support to the protest, held the day the statewide ban goes into effect.
If you can pass the word to ANYONE to help out it would be super. I can't possibly make it because I live too far south, but I've been doing my best to encourage folks to helps them out.
My hometown has gone to the dogs :(

Thanks for the info!
The people I was out with last night are going...a few of them are bartenders, they are totally P.O.'d about the smoking ban.

Boy, with all the terrorist activities, why don't these people just walk around with bullseye's painted on their shirts and say "SHOOT ME"
People have WAY too much time on their hands.

The whole concept is just plain neat. I'd love to try something like that around here (Alabama), but I'm afraid it'd be lost on people.

Only hit the "post" button once. Don't know why it posted three times. Might be subconsciously creating my own mob...

"Maneko Neki" Are you sure that isn't "Maneki Neko", the "lucky cat" statues with one paw raised that are popular in Japan?
To: Junior
I agree with you. It's just pure fun. It shows just how much people really do want to belong to something bigger than themselves. It's just hard for some people to admit it.

Reminds me of the flock of Latinos that swarm around when we have a yard sale. One minute it's quiet, the next there's 10 cars pulling up with 5 or 6 people in each. Moms with lots of kids, men and boys with their coworkers taking a break from work, I just start repeating the words, "One dollar, one dollar?, si, one dollar..."
And, if you're out going to the yard sales? If you run into this group, you'll be blessed with their company for the rest of the day. Wherever you go, they go... wherever they go, you go... It just works that way, there's nothing you can do to stop it.

Boy, with all the terrorist activities, why don't these people just walk around with bullseye's painted on their shirts and say "SHOOT ME" That was my thought too. Once a terrorist got the idea. He could set a bomb or bio-weapon ahead of time and get a large kill rate.
I hope this goes the way of the Wave in sports stadiums before something bad happens.

D'oh! So it is. Why don't I just go and commit hari-kari? ;-)
To: Physicist
You mean like those kamakazis who would drink saki before flying out of Tokeyo? :-)
(Of course all of these are better than the people who mix up Japanese and Chinese and don't know any better...)
