a. this is a picture of a murder. period
b. This one is a picture of the murdfer of the President,
and I could care less what words you try to use to defend it.
There is no excuse for this cartoon and the guy I blame is the editor who ran it.
Fire his sorry ass.

He was part of a VC Cadre sent to kill the Chief's family. Justice was swift and sure. You bet, and it's the police chief in this photo that shot this NVC.

As a little experiment that will conform or refute some of the theories expressed above - wonder what the DUers are saying about this right now?

Re:
Another cartoonist could now depict The Secret Service stomping on a document with the label "First Amendment." As long as the cartoon doesn't have a gun to the temple of the leader of my government, it would be legal.
This is not.

Clockwork Orange is around the bend. I'm guessing that the appearance in furniture stores of certain types of 'interesting' sculptures will be the confirmation of that...

I really don't care if this cartoon was drawn by William F. Buckley. People looking at a cartoon don't have the body of his work to compare to. They simply are looking at a cartoon in their paper.
I showed this cartoon to my daughter who is 24. She was horrified. When I explained the picture to her, she still thought it was in poor taste. She is an art major and is used to looking for meaning in graphic representations, so this "deep thinking" thing is not working for her.
My husband looked at it and simply thought Ramirez was a communist. After I explained it to him, he still dislikes it and says that all this talking is beside the point, it's a gun at Bush's head.
So, there you have it. My husband is an engineer, daughter is an art school grad, both are IQ's way above normal, and their initial reaction was quite the opposite of what the cartoonist apparently intended. The cartoon is a failure.

Its TARGET audience is conservatives -- Ramirez is one of the best conservative cartoonists extant. If you are uneducated, you are not a good conervative. One of the cornerstones of conservative thought is thought based on rational reason. This cannot occur in an educational or informational (or grey cell) vacuum. In the photograph, the bad guy gets shot.
In the cartoon, W is about to get shot.
So, if you really understand what happened in this picture, you'd realize that Bush is being depicted as the bad guy. THAT is the real parallel being drawn. Emotionally, you may feel bad for the guy being shot, but one of the cornerstones of conservative thought is based on rational reason.

My first impression is that this is a pro-Bush cartoon, depicting him being unfairly attacked by 'politics'.
After thinking it through, I am sure of it.

"There is no doubt in my mind the liberal media is trying to plant assassination ideas in people's heads." Here is the drill: LA Times will apologize profusely but the seed has already been planted.
Much like the lawyer in court who makes statements he knows the court will have stricken on an objection. He made his point to the jury.

The cartoon is a failure. Agreed. Ramirez will need more than a cartoon to explain his way out of this.

Same picture !!
1. The President's shirt is plaid.
2. Shooter's hair is the very same.
3.Shooter's sleeves rolled the same way.
4.Look at the shadow between the shooter and President Bush !
5.Look at the buildings in the background.
No one can dispute who he copied this from.

Thank you! Maybe I was correct in speculating that writing it as Viet Nam is a Hoosier thing. At least I now can relax.
