Johnny Depp, Pirate of St. Tropez

USA Weekend.com ran a July 6, 2003, story on the “always offbeat” star of the new Disney movie, “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” Basically, the story on Depp is a condemnation of America, its people and its place in the world. Johnny “loves” America, but prefers France. He moved there five years ago and has never looked back. You see France is far more civilized than America for Johnny as he is “shocked by the gun violence in American schools and feels it is far safer raising a family in France.”

As an actor I like Johnny Depp.. too bad he's trying to rid himself of his American roots.. guess Depp's ashamed he's from Kentucky.

Depp's pirate act was too sissified for me. He was way too effeminate and the black crewmate was way too butch. Disney is in deep dodo.

Unfortunately Finding Nemo put Disney back on the map.

Great movie BTW...every now and then Disney will pull some of its old magic out of its arse.

I've liked all of the movies I've seen that he was in. Sleepy hollow, 9th gate. Ok both of the movies.

Depp may be a jerk politically, but his performance is brilliant in "Pirates" - the only must-see movie so far this year.

I generally like Depps movies too, but I am always struck by how much he looks like a girl. Have you ever seen Whats Eating Gilbert Grape? (I think that is the title) It is a strange movie & you want to laugh but its not funny & I don't know whether it was supposed to be or not.

You can't go wrong with having a movie about pirates. Or ninjas. Or having it in space. Then I guess it would be an awesome movie to have pirate ninjas in space : )

Then again, the folks over at Disney love the guy. After all, they are the same company that wanted to bankroll Michael Moore’s new hate-America project until the word got out and many Americans became upset. Apparently Disney folded at the prospect of being discovered to be whom they really are (among the “elite Left”), and now Mikey has to find funding elsewhere.

I think that the author is confused on this point. Disney is still funding this project last I heard.

"Is Disney Lying to America About Michael Moore?" (ABC-Disney-Miramax funding project) (June 13, 2003)

A recent spate of articles began appearing again that seemed to be reliant upon old information about Disney and Moore. So we decided to call Eisner's office AGAIN. This time, we got the same story, BUT, were actually given the name of Matthew Hiltzik at Miramax (212) 625-2222. Matthew hemmed and hawed, but to our surprise he did ADMIT that a bridge financing deal is in fact, reality. Matthew seemed uncomfortable admitting this, claimed it's an old deal that was approved after Icon passed on the Moore project, and that he did not know of any future involvement between Miramax and Moore.

Great movie.

A cross between Treasure Island and the Princess Bride. I just wish Andre the Giant was around to be a rhyming pirate.

Gosh...I loved Johnny Depp in Pirates. I thought he was very appealing. Very HOT! Even dirty!

But he is off my list now! France can have him!

Check out "Ed Wood" -- one of his best performances and the movie itself is a hoot too!

Johnny sees the French as far more sophisticated and erudite than the backward Americans. “He rejects the view that there has been a surge of anti-Americanism there because of opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq, and he believes the French people have behaved in a dignified manner while some Americans have resorted to ‘schoolyard tactics’ by renaming French fries ‘freedom fries.”’

Johnny explains, “That was so revealing, that grown men sat around and came up with that idea,” talking about freedom fries. “It was tragic and embarrassing. At the same time, I was happy it was exposed, and people knew that a bunch of congressmen -- big people, the upper-drawer people -- made that decision.” Johnny seems to really like France and is very protective.

Quit whining, Johnny. The French have been doing the same type of thing, purging English phrases from their language. I think that "e-mail" was the most recent word to get savaged.

The same people who decried "Freedom Fries" (instead of calling them "Snivelling French Fries") have been silent on the French supression of English terms.
