Support Fisher House
The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need by providing homes close to a loved one during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

There are currently 31 houses located on the grounds of every major military medical center and several VA medical centers. These houses will play a critical role in caring for casualties from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Donations will be used to help meet the cost of lodging for a family whose loved one was injured in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. There is a limit to the number of families who can stay in a Fisher House and program is committed to help provide lodging for families who must find commercial lodging, because the Fisher House is full.

Today's FEEBLE attempt at humor:

A fellow and his wife in Muskogee, Oklahoma, where the people are all
patriots, were blessed with the birth of twins, two identical girls.
These twins were born on the 4th of July, and the father, being
patriotic, said to his wife, "We will name them Liberty and Justice,
after the pledge of allegiance".

His wife said, "Are you nuts? You can't have girls going through
life with names like Liberty and Justice. We are going to name them
regular girl's names like Mary or Jane". Well, the argument went on for
about a month, when a compromise was reached. They would each name one
of the girls. The man chose Liberty and the wife picked Elizabeth.

As the girls grew, they were so identical, they kept pulling tricks
on people who couldn't tell them apart. Finally, when they were about
18, a young man took interest in them. He would take one out on a date
but he was never sure which one he was with. He decided he would marry
one of them, or both if he could get away with it, but he wasn't sure
which one he would marry, if he could only get one.

He went to the girls' father and explained his quandary. "I love your
daughters and want to marry one of them, but I can't tell them apart, so
I will leave it up to you".......

"Give me Liberty or give me Beth".

Excerpt from the Remarks by President Bush in honor of Independence Day
United States Air Force Museum, Dayton, Ohio | July 4, 2003

"...Our nation is still at war. The enemies of America plot against us.
And many of our fellow citizens are still serving and sacrificing
and facing danger in distant places.
Many military families are separated. Our people in uniform do not have easy duty,
and much depends on their success. Without America's active involvement in the world,
the ambitions of tyrants would go unopposed, and millions would live at the mercy of terrorists.
With Americans' active involvement in the world, tyrants learn to fear, and terrorists are on the run..."

Good morning all. I hope our men and women in uniform stay safe today, and know they have our support, always, no matter how tough the going gets.

C-47BailOut.jpg (23092 bytes)

60 years ago today

9 July 1943

Operation HUSKY involved four separate airborne operations, two by the Bristish and two by the 82nd Airborne. The first operation HUSKY I spearheaded this airborne invasion of Sicily. Led by Col. James M. "Slim Jim" Gavin,  the 505th PIR, and the 3rd Battalion of the 504th PIR were organized into a Regimental Combat Team. Their first objective was to parachute into an area around Gela on the southern shore of Sicily to close off roads leading to the beaches and secure the drop zone for the next operation. They were also to take out Objective Y which was a series of 16 concrete "pillboxes"  from which German gunners controlled movement on the nearby roads. Under a nearly full moon the  paratroopers crossed over the on schedule and jumped on their assigned drop zone on 9 July 1943 -- an event which British Prime Minister Winston Churchill termed, "not the beginning of the end, but the end of the beginning."

The second operation called HUSKY II involved the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 504th PIR, led by Colonel Reuben H. Tucker. They loaded the C-47 aircraft and took off for Sicily from the dusty airstrip near Kairouan, Tunisia. Near the Sicilian coast, however, a nervous Allied naval vessel suddenly fired upon the formation. Immediately, all other naval vessels and shore troops joined in, downing friendly aircraft and forcing planeloads of paratroopers to exit far from their intended drop zones in one of the greatest tragedies of World War II. Twenty-three of 144 USAAF transports were shot down by friendly fire and a total of 318 American troops were killed or wounded in the operation.

Colonel Tucker’s plane, after twice flying the length of the Sicilian coast and with well over 2,000 holes in its fuselage, finally reached the drop zone near Gela. By morning, only 400 of the Regiment’s 1600 soldiers had reached the objective area. The others had been dropped in isolated groups on all parts of the island and carried out demolitions, cut lines of communication, established island roadblocks, ambushed German and Italian motorized columns, and caused so much confusion over such an extensive area that initial German radio reports estimated the number of American parachutists dropped to be over ten times the actual number.

Meanwhile, the troopers of the 504th 3rd Battalion along with the 505th PIR fought an enemy superior in numbers and equipment. Ambushes were conducted and even Objective Y, the deadly pillboxes, were secured. By continuing to fight in small groups the 82nd led the Germans and Italians to continue to overestimate the number of airborne invaders thus impeding any meaningful counterattacks. The German Herman Goering Panzer Division was another matter. Even though outmanned and outgunned, the 82nd used raw courage and fighting spirit to block the steel behemoths of this Division from advancing toward the Allied landings on the beachhead.

By D+3, they had accomplished their initial mission and were relieved by the 1st Infantry Division to return to regimental control.

Wednesday's weird warship, CSS Manassas

Manassas class Ironclad ram
Displacementt. 387 t.
Lenght. 143'
Beam. 33'
Draft. 17'
Complement. 36
Armament. 1 64-pdr. Dahlgren

CSS MANASSAS, formerly the steam propeller ENOCH TRAIN, was built at Medford, Mass., by J. O. Curtis in 1855. A New Orleans commission merchant, Capt. J. A. Stevenson, acquired her for use as a privateer and fitted her out at Algiers, La., as an ironclad ram of radically modern design. Covered with 1-inch iron plating, her hull projected only 2 feet above the water, and her plated top was convex causing cannon shot to glance off harmlessly. She was provided with sharp irons on her bow to stave holes through enemy vessels. Fast moving, lying low in the water and a difficult target, virtually bomb-proof, she looked like a floating cigar or egg shell and was described by Union intelligence as a "hellish machine."

Commissioned as a Confederate privateer on 12 September 1861 MANASSAS was seized soon afterwards by Flag Officer G. N. Hollins, CSN, for use in the lower Mississippi River. With Lieutenant A. F. Worley, CSN, in command she participated in Flag Officer Hollins' surprise attack on the Federal blockading squadron at Head of Passes, Mississippi River, on 12 October 1861. In the action MANASSAS violently rammed USS RICHMOND damaging her severely below the water line. MANASSAS, however, suffered the loss of her prow and smokestack and had her engines temporarily thrown out of gear from the impact. She managed to retire under heavy fire from USS PREBLE and RICHMOND whose shells glanced off her armor. Two months after this engagement MANASSAS was purchased for direct ownership by the Confederate Government.

Under Lieutenant Worley, MANASSAS joined the force of Capt. J. K. Mitchell, CSN, commanding Confederate naval forces in the lower Mississippi. She participated in the engagement of 24 April 1862 during which Flag Officer Farragut, USN, on his way to New Orleans, ran his fleet past the Confederate forts Jackson and St. Philip. In the action MANASSAS attempted to ram USS PENSACOLA which turned in time to avoid the blow and deliver a broadside at close range. MANASSAS then ran into murderous fire from the whole line of the Union fleet. She then charged USS MISSISSIPPI and delivered a long glancing blow on her hull, firing her only gun as she rammed. Next she rammed USS BROOKLYN, again firing her gun, and injuring her rather deeply, but not quite enough to be fatal.

After this action MANASSAS followed the Union fleet quietly for a while but as she drew closer MISSISSIPPI furiously turned on her. MANASSAS managed to dodge the blow but was run aground. Her crew escaped as MISSISSIPPI poured her heavy broadsides on the stranded Confederate vessel. Later MANASSAS slipped off the bank and drifted down the river in flames past the Union mortar flotilla. Comdr. D. D. Porter, USN, in command of the mortar boats, tried to save her as an engineering curiosity but MANASSAS exploded and immediately plunged under water.
