A Few Of FR's Finest....Every Day....07-09-03...."Things I've Learned In Life"

A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

~ Billie, dansangel, dutchess, Mama_Bear, Aquamarine

*Note* ~ The text for today's thread was submitted to me by nicmarlo several weeks ago. Since then, she has virtually disappeared from FR. I still wanted to present this lighthearted, personal view of life and I hope to hear from dear nicmarlo once again really soon.

Thanks "nicmarshmallow" - I miss you. Hurry back! ~dansdevil~

For the convenience of all skiers on the ski lift, when you get to the top, you're supposed to ski off the lift (rather than have the operator stop the lift, remove your skis, and catch you in their arms).

3) In the next box enter your name in the "Calendar Text" field and then click on submit.
4) If any of the screens fail to load simply click on refresh in your browser and that will usually fix it.

If you have someone you would like to add, please address a post to Billie; Dansangel; Dutchess; Mama_Bear; and we will add their name to this list. As we pray for them, we pray also for all our nation’s leaders, and military personnel, and their families and friends. May God hold them close to His heart.

We ask Lord, that You guide the leaders of our great country in their hour of decision. The burden that has been placed on their shoulders is overwhelming. We ask that with Your infinite wisdom You guide them gently to the right decisions.
Please give us the strength, Lord, to get through each difficult and devastating day that faces each of us and our country. Protect and guide our Military that are now being called to duty, strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. I am *so* familiar with that area, having lived an hour north of King's Island for 8 years.

I think you probably meant I-75 - that's the main thoroughfair through those parts.

People are so wonderfully nice in that area - that young man was probably as harmless as a newborn kitty - but you were wise to be cautious all the same. Thank goodness you had a nice trooper stop for you!

Don’t give teething toddlers pieces of carrot to chew on. They have a tendency to become curious about the two holes in their nose and will stick the left over carrot up there only to be found hours later by a doctor.

Ouch! That hurts just thinking about it Spookie! LOL!

I think the "burb" Mason is on the outerbelt where Kings Island is(maybe not I70 but not 75 which goes right through Cincy)

Anyway...thought of you when GW was at Wright Patterson on the 4th. Dr.Deb was there...unfortunately we couldn't be but he was VERY WELL RECEIVED!

Thats why I wear cowboy boots.

Right! I swear the washing machine has a way of eating socks - with boots, it doesn't matter if one grey and one blue sock is all you can find. ;)

I went to school right next door at Wright State U. I attended and graduated as an "adult" student (late-bloomer). You can bet that if I was still up there, I would have been at Wright Patterson to see the President!

Hmmmm.....

I don't wear cowboy boots, but I always (unless dressed up) wear shoe-boots of one form or another. Even in the summer. It's been one of my "signature" fashion faux pas. Oh well, I was never one to follow the crowd.

Anyway, maybe that's why I favor boots - they make socks a no-brainer!

Only you could tell that story like that! Ned Bundy! LOL!

But, seriously, you 'do' feel more helpless driving alone without a cell phone - a few times I've jumped in the car just to run an errand and forgotten my phone - if I haven't gone far, I turn around and go back and get it. I want that security!

I love boots in the winter. But in the summer, about all I wear is flipflops or sandals of some sort - both high heeled and low heels! So NO socks! :)

And here's a shocker: I don't own a pair of cowboy boots either, in spite of all the 'cowgirl' stuff I post or have on my profile page! LOL!

I've got to get back to John's essay. Again, I loved today's thread, and wish that nicmarlo was here to see what you did with it.

Nic, this is for you:

"Gearheads Just Know."

Yes, martin_fierro, I was Daddy's Last Great Hope, one older sister married and the other a primping teenager - although she was the one who at 14 shot the wildcat out of the lemon tree in the grove by the house.
One learns survival techniques or else living 12 miles from town, Daddy tired of Miami/Coral Gables city life and wanted to be centrally located for projects all over Florida.

At 11 I gathered all kinds of *skills* - -

Learned to be patient without complaining handing tools to Daddy when he worked on cars - could start the generator (power lines came out the next year) - took over Yard Boy duties and loved it, using a push mower and clipping the zillion Australian pine tree shoots down along the lined driveway - cut firewood for the fireplace - beat/chopped to death any and all snakes that abounded in our Florida setting.

At the same time, I'd watched my Mom and sisters sewing, and insisted I could make a blouse with set-in sleeves by myself, and did, buttonholes and all - embroidered - alternated daily with Mom doing the crossword puzzles in The Miami Herald (and able to get all but 2-3 letters or complete it) - and made great Jello..:)) Okay - cakes from scratch, too.

One day Daddy decided to check some of the property lines for accuracy (1,000 acres then - sold down to 640 later) and took me out, teaching me how to use the transit and he held the rod.

We girls never had any gender lines drawn, thankfully, and were encouraged to sit in when professional friends visited and spent the night. So long as we exhibited proper manners (Mom was from SC, and had taught school), we were allowed to interject questions and thoughts and opinions.
For fun, I roamed the canal banks and read a lot, including our set of The Book of Knowledge that was more than an encyclopedia.

That was in 1945, the last year of WWII...I thus was more than a little Betty Crocker with apron...:)) and patriotic to the max.

In early 1949, I was *allowed* at 14 ("A" brain-teacher's pet) to be included in the First Driver's Training Class at Melbourne High, dansy, learning the engine and how it worked before we were given actual driving - made the highest grade on the text finals with a 98. In my Senior year, was the first girl to take Mechanical Drawing at MelHi. Lines and curves and figures are not For Males Only !!
Had my own drafting board at home to do my projects and played in class....

Yes, martin_fierro - I am both LadyX and the Zot Woman whose image you created..:))

Thanks.

Yeah, she had some health problems a while back and didn't feel like messing with it. She's doing a bit better now and misses keeping up with her old friends. They are retired AF folks and moved around a LOT, of course. Then, after they 'retired', they got a motor home and traveled around. Now, given the restraints that time has imposed on them, they have finally 'settled down' and bought a house !! LOL!

It was a nice visit with them today. Had a problem with their computer box. By the time they would have spent money to get the power supply replaced on their OLD 'puter etc., it turned out cheaper to get another box. So I'll go back tomorrow and finish the job.

I'll see ya'll sometime manana !
