My picks:
- The Patriot (the Roland Emmerich ?sp? film, starring Mel Gibson, NOT NOT NOT the one with Steven Seagal)
- Hoosiers
By the way, how could two films entitled "The Patriot" have been released so closely together? Are there any rules that govern this situation?

What is a conservative movie?
To: VOA
good work, VOA!

Good question. Depends on your definition I guess. I think films that uphold traditional values, recognize the benfit of small government over large government, and emphasize community and a thoughtful patriotism are conservative films. Or any film that challenges ideologies and "isms". I don't label any film "conservative" that celebrates military victories as conservative automatically. As I said even the Soviet Union made films celebrating the honor, heroism, and true grit of it's soldiers. That being said "When We Were Soldiers" is still a great film.

You forgot "The Wind and the Lion".

A great choice!
To: patriotmovies
McClintock. Metropolis (in a libertarian way). Casablanca. The Stranglers of Bombay (OK, I'm stretching here). Cherry 2000. The Dogs of War. The Nightmare Before Christmas. Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Rankin-Bass version)
O.K., now I'm just getting weird...
I just love these rambling threads!

Second the motion on We Were Soldiers.
To: patriotmovies
"We Were Soldiers"-Definately belongs on the list.
"The Ten Commandments"-an obvious choice.
Another movie, in my opinion would be "The Power of One". The story is about Apartheid in South Africa. But it also shows how one person can make a difference, wich is conservative. Morgan Freeman stars and is great in his role and so is everyone else. It's an outstanding movie. At the end of there is a scene where the South African children are being taught to read and they are reading from our Constitution- "all men are created equal..".
If you haven't seen it , it's worth a trip to the video store (if you can find it) But warning: This is DEFINATELY NOT A KIDS MOVIE. It has some very graphic and violent scenes.

I liked We Were Soldiers because it didn't bad mouth America and it showed the hero praying with his children.
To me a film that can be honored by conservatives is one that honors our values and doesn't offend us with left wing propaganda. It doesn't have to preach second amendment or smaller government till we're bored silly.

The American Film Renaissance Institute will conduct the Ronnie Awards, similar to the Oscars. "The Ronnies" will have a special award: "The John Milius Award for Rugged Individualism in the Arts"
Milius was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in the film "Apocalypse Now". Milius's credits include: Jaws, Apocalypse Now, Dirty Harry, RED DAWN, Conan the Barbarian, Dillinger, Flight of the Intruder, Rough Riders, Farewell to the King, The Wind and the Lion, among others.
Milius is credited for penning the following lines:
(1) "Go ahead, make my day"
(2) "I love the smell of napalm in the morning"
(3) The USS Indianapolis speech in "JAWS"
Who, in your opinion, should receive the first "John Milius Award for Rugged Individualism in the Arts"?

Well, I have to confess a hole in my Eastwood viewing in that I haven't seen Pale Rider. But OJW is one of my favorite flicks. I do, however, see there might be a little excess violence in the movie, with its two rape scenes and the deaths of probably more than a hundred.
That, however, doesn't disqualify it in my book, as the murderin' types end up getting theirs or looking quite the monstrous sort. What might disqualify it, is while it's entertaining, I'm not sure exactly what the message is.
Is it:
"Dyin' ain't much of a livin', boy."
"Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?"
"Buzzards gotta eat...same as worms."
"When things look bad, and it looks like you're not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean. I mean plumb mad dog mean. Cause if you lose your head and you give up, then you neither live nor win, that's just the way it is."
Okay, maybe the theme IS conservative.

You know, there was a film RR did that the awarding body of the Conservative Film Inst. may not have appreciated either.
RR's costar in the movie was Virginia Mayo, who played an exotic dancer, (Hot Garters Getlie), while she went back to school,
As you could guess, Hot Garters' was discovered, (she used another name while in school), and some folks didn't much appreciate her being on campus.
RR gave a public speech in defense of her though, strongly asserting her right to an education.
The name of the movie is She's Working Her Way Through College
