Gee, you mean that since carbohydrates convert to pure sugar that diabetics shouldn't carb load? But Dr. Atkins COULDN'T be right. He said sugar mattered...that crackpot.

For years, I was a low-carb skeptic. I just couldn't believe that increasing your fats and protein would cause you to lose weight. It went against everything that the medical community had been saying for years. So I continued eating my oatmeal and pancakes for breakfast (instead of eggs and bacon) and my bowls of pasta instead of what I really wanted, a good juicy steak. As well, I ate bagels for lunch and snacked on all kinds of high-carb snacks, avoiding the fat whenever I could.

Well I figured I'd give this low-carb thing a try. So I went low-carb on April 1 and have lost 51 pounds since. If anybody out there was a skeptic like me, I urge you to give it a try. I never did the Atkins plan with the ketosis and all. But I did cut carbs out of my diet as much as I could as well as all junk and processed foods (which are loaded with carbs). I now have eggs every morning for breakfast and lots of steak and other meats. What a difference. Wish I'd done this 10 years ago.

Just a couple of comments regarding this artice from a type 1 diabetic.

Low carb works well for diabetics. It takes the swings out the sugar readings and aids in the loss of weight which reduces insulin requirements even further. I lost over 70lbs without really trying by following the advice in Dr. Berstein's book, Diabetes Solution. It changed my life.

I will reserve my caustic comments for the American Diabetes Association. The ADA will never admit that they are wrong. They would have to change all of their cookbooks. They also would loose most of their donors as people lost weight and became non-diabetic. And then what would they do? Did you know that the ADA spends less than 20% of money received on research. They use children extensively in their ads to get people to donate but do almost nothing for type 1 reseach. Type 1 being the type that impact children that they exploit in their ads. They are a complete and total waste and anyone that gives money to them is a fool.

I lost about 25 pounds on Atkins about a year and a half ago and have since gained it back. I just started yesterday to get back on program. The first 2-3 days are the hardest!!! My husband is one of those people who can eat anything and not gain a pound. It really pisses me off (I can put on muscle really easily and that pisses him off LOL!).

The first few days when the carbs are leaving my system I crave really strange things that I don't normally eat. Like cherry pie, frosting in the can, and tiramesu (sp?). Has anyone else had that kind of experience?? It goes away after about 48-72 hours, but it's a real uphill battle during that time.

Dont forget to wash down all those pizzas, potato chips and cinnamon rolls with a few liters of your favorite soda or "100% pure" fruit juice.

It's bad enough the FDA wants us to all eat like cows, but for the American Diabetic Assn. to go even further is stunning! I agree with the doctor in the article who said this:

This possibility is now the source of heated debate in the diabetes community. It is "the most controversial aspect of diabetes treatment today," says Scott King, editor-in-chief of Diabetes Interview magazine. How controversial? "Malpractice!" is how physician and diabetes specialist Lois Jovanovic, chief scientific officer of the Sansum Medical Research Institute in Santa Barbara, Calif., describes conventional high-carb nutrition advice.

(I say this as someone who is against all the frivolous class action lawsuits flying around these days, such as the anti-fat lawsuits and the anti-smoking jihad.)

I put myself on a low fat diet right after Christmas and I've lost 37 pounds. I'm kind of stuck at 175 lbs. now, but that's not even overweight depending on which height/weight chart you go by. I think I might switch over to a carb conscious diet now but I'm at more of a maintenance stage, I don't really need to lose a lot of weight. I'm still formulating what eating habits I need to establish to keep my weight off, losing weight isn't as important now since I'm not overweight anymore. Though I would like to lose about 7-10 more pounds to put myself well below my maximum weight. I guess I need to research this a little bit, I'm more interested in the energy aspects and not feeling hungry parts of dieting now.

All you need to do is look at ARNOLD and other body builders to see the benefit of a high protein, exercise rich life style. Protein helps build muscle, muscle burns fat. Kind of makes sense doesn't it. Hey while we are suing MickeyD's let's sue the grain growers for filling us full of addicting carbs and the ADA for going along with it.

Hey, has anyone tried those starch blocker pills? I remember reading in the paper recently that they actually do work. They block some enzyme in the small intestine which would normally break down starch into sugar. So the starch gets passed through as if it were fiber. The article said they block up to 2/3 the ingested starch this way.

Yeah, here's the article I was thinking of.

OK folks I'll conduct a little class in human physiology and biochemistry.

Insulin metabolizes glucose. Thats a fact. Glucose is the final biproduct of carbohydrates, complex carbohydrates, and the breakdown of fat (stored fat). Glucose is necessary for normal body function, but only in certain controlled amounts. Insulin controls the level of glucose in the blood steam, hence the metabolic process, at any given time in the body. When the body takes in too much carbohydrates it converts some to fat (storage) cells, it uses the rest for metabolism. It stores far more that what it uses, unless you are running around the world. Therefore, the intake of carbohyrates means that you WILL need increased insulin to regulate the amount of glucose in your system for normal function of your body.

If your pancreas, especially the Ilets of Langerhans (the cells that produce insulin) are defective or surpressed they will not be able to produce the amounts of insulin to metabolize the rush of glucose that are produced in an big sugar or carbohydrate overload. This is the disease known as "Insulin dependant diabetes". In other words, insulin must be supplimented, by outside means, to assist the body in metabolizing glucose.

Now that you know the facts and our little "secret" (medicine is simple, if you use your brain) what would you think about a high carbohydrate diet for a diabetic? Pretty stupid, huh?

The weight loss system in the eyes of these "clinical dieticians" is unscientific and is now, thank God, being proven flawed and downright wrong. A diet high in protein, fat, and low in carbohydrates (low to the point of none) can manage an insulin dependant diabetic much better than the garbage that has been given the for years.

I wish I could go on and on to explain this but I can't. Not because I don't know, but because I have a chest to refinish for the love of my life. Look up what I have stated here and you will find the truth. It's biochemistry, it's human physiology, it's fact, and it's not that hard to figure out, after your are informed.

Since the ADA, the FDA, the CIA, FBI, and all of those guys started telling us how to eat, we have grown fatter and fatter, and have more cases of diabetes!

Strange … I’m a diabetic, and I was told to limit carbohydrates to no more than 40 grams four times a day – that’s half a cup of potatoes or rice, or about one slice of bread.
No more mashed potato sandwiches.
