MSNBC fires Savage after anti-gay remarks

NEW YORK - MSNBC on Monday fired Michael Savage for anti-gay comments.

The popular radio talk show host who did a weekend TV show for the cable channel referred to an unidentified caller to his show Saturday as a "sodomite" and said he should "get AIDS and die."

The Supreme Court's over turning of Sodomy Laws a week earlier, should have been an omen to Savage, to watch his sausage sucking comments.

I heard him question an engineer about fuel-cell cars. He didn't allow the caller to finish a single sentence, and his questions showed that he had no idea of any of the technical matters involved, although most of his questions started with an assertion that he knew all about it. The discussion wasn't political, but purely technical. There was no anger involved; Savage simply didn't have a clue how to carry on a conversation.

I consider the title misleading. Those weren't anti-gay comments. They were ruthless, irresponsible comments that he should not have made & I don't feel sorry for him for getting fired. An anti-gay comment would something to the effect that "homosexual behavior is wrong". I'll stand by anyone's right to make that comment.

There are several differences between Savage and Downey that are in Savage's favor. First, Savage is a self-made man, not a rich man's son who socialized with the Kennedys in Palm Beach as a young man. (Morton Downey, Sr. was a famous singer in the 1920s and 1930s, who apparently invested his money well.) Secondly, Savage is something of a health food nut, thereby proving a marked contrast with the chain smoking Morton Downey. Thirdly, it appears that, for all his abrasiveness, Savage is a stable family man, much unlike Downey, whose personal life was a mess. Finally, Savage is not unlike Howard Stern, with a genius for self-promotion, along with business acumen that Downey lacked.

Don't bet in Savage going away anytime soon even if his MSNBC show is taken off the air.

Savage has said worse to many other callers. But, I guess if you say it to a "sodomite"...er...a member of a protected class of people who define themselves by a particular behavior in which they engage - then you're asking to be fired.

while the "Sodomite" comment probably didnt help, wishing a horrible death on a listener is not what station managers and more importantly advertisers want associated with their stations or products.

A couple of left-leaning shock jocks here in the D.C. Area on WJFK, the "all shock jock all the time" station. To call them cheap Howard Stern imitators would be a gross understatement. I don't think they've ever done one bit that they didn't steal directly from Stern.

Nah I've listened to Don and Mike since they started on JFK in '92, they're almost completely apolitical and almost never mention other "political" hosts, which is why one of their listeners pranking Savage seems strange...

Savage has been saying that stuff for years, it just sounds like MSNBC was looking for an excuse to get rid of him.

As for your insults, they're understandable. When people are exposed as idiots they often respond by flailing their arms wildly. If it makes you happy you can continue to flail and snort away.

Does this mean that NBC would fire anyone that wishes for the death of Charlton Heston (NRA), President Bush (remember the pretzel jokes?), Henry Hyde (from the Clinton impeachement), Newt Gingrich, and Ronald Reagan? I agree that Savage crossed the line in his comments, but let's not have a double-standard. <P.Right on! However Savage is a good radio man. This show was never going anywhere. I like his radio show. Sure he has his worts & all but he's different & to the point. He's just too stuck on himself. If you have heard him you know that he really doesn't want to get into the homo issue but these twerps who are more anti-Bush, anti-America push his button then he unloads on them. He talks about often watching the Godfather. I guess he didn't learn a prime lesson in it as I did. Remember Sonny Corleone & how they set him up to kill him at the toll booth. That was Morton Downey Junior. Robert Downey Jr. is the Hollywood actor with the cocaine problem.

Having listened to him argue points that were flat-out incorrect I can only conclude that he is stupid, but that is not the point. Just like Morford makes rational Liberals (are there any?) look bad Savages makes all Conservatives look like cavemen.

Savage is right and MS NBC is going get screwed on this deal. He will spend the next 20-years attacking them. You can't give the GLBT crowd an inch or they will take a mile. You can choose to fight GLBT crowd or give them everthing they want.
