Just another way to get the common folks quaking in fear and pleading to have Big Brother take care of everything for them!

I have long thought that the 'rat wet dream is to make America a leftist version of Calvin's Geneva. Still do.

And no deadly Value Meal items for 99 cents at McDonald's! At LEAST add another $1.00 to the price to pay off the class action extortionist shysters. WE'LL get our nice little worthless coupons, so the lawyers can get their multi-billion cold cash settlement.

Oh, and have you seek any shyster ravaged playgrounds recently? A kid would have more fun watching the grass grow!

I grew up in the thirties and forties and it was great on the Fourth of July.

Bonfires, sparklers, and all those little red firecrackers. Everyone had them,we all had fun,and I don't recall anyone getting hurt.

If anyone did get hurt there would not have been any lawsuits, but an admonition from our parents to be more careful next time.

Perfect article for this fireworkless 4th of July.

Helmets, kneepads, elbow pads, dayglo clothing, good Lord! I remember metal rollerskates...and playing roller derby wearing them. I'm surprised one of us didn't end up with broken bones. These days if your kid falls out of a tree(or tips over in her chair in class resulting in a fractured elbow), the cops question them. Hey it's got to be someone's fault that the kid broke something! Let's wrap them up in cotton!

I don't know how old you are, but remember when we could get all the kids on the street for an impromtu game of baseball or street hockey? This is the main reason why kids are fat. We can't let them out for fear that some crabby neighbor will call the police. My kids and the neighbors kids had a water balloon fight on thursday, and I was literally worried that the cranks who live across from us would call the cops! Complete Bravo Sierra. I want my damn fireworks back!!!!! /rant

The good old days. I'm living in my parents house(dad passed away, mom has Alzheimers), and I sat outside on the 4th, looking at where my dad and I would light them off every year. Some people are so mean spirited, that I think it causes them physical pain to see people have fun.

You must be about my age. I not only remember those metal skates (broke my arm on them once *GASP*). I also remember about 1952 when we had 2-wheeled skates, very much like the current in-line skates. They had two big rust colored rubber wheels, and were impossible to master. Wish I had them today; they'd be a collector's item.

I'm starting to think that the popularity of the "extreme" sports and "jackass" stunts that kids are doing is connected to the fact that, with all the "protection" they've had, they actually don't realize they CAN get hurt. I learned that I was NOT indestructable at a very early age. heheheh.

Interesting but WHAT does this have to do with Calvinism?

A Calvinist, like a puritan, is someone who is afraid someone else somewhere is having a good time.

Absolutely nothing.

I understand. But let me ask you a question: Are you a Believer?

I grew up in the 50s and 60s and someone was always getting a finger or hand blown off at New Years or the 4th of July. That is not a reason for more laws, but for better teaching of Darwinism in the schools.

Yes, but it's not something I care to discuss.

I could go a lot of ways with that one. But since I adhere to the Golden Rule (do unto others as you would have them do unto you), I'll yield.

This hackneyed aphorism is without historical or empirical merit. I am a Calvinist and I am certainly not afraid of someone having a good time as long as they are not impinging on my rights. In fact, unlike most pietists or legalisys, true Calvinists believe it is possible to glorify God in all areas of life. We simply do not think that gives one the right to take advantage of one's neighbor.

H.L. Mencken's aphorism about Republicans applies now to the left. He maintained that a Republican was scared that "someone, somewhere, might be having a good time".

Folks, we are the Guns and Good Times Party.

Then it does not apply to you.

It most certainly did apply to Geneva when Calvin was defacto dictator there, hence the definition.

"Folks, we are the Guns and Good Times Party."

Good booze, good cigars, great cars, fantastic women, fast aircraft, guns, fireworks, competitive sports, loud parties, and private land.

In short, what we have and do is what the Left wants to ban or demonize or make everyone fear the trial lawyers and police about.

Could you see the fireworks again?

Sometimes I dream of my dad, and it is so odd, he is always just arriving and we are just about to go on some adventure, but somehow, we get caught up in making the bed, or sweeping the floor or any number of mundane things and I wake up before it is over.

We went fishing once when I was about 10, we went to this bass lake and on the way we drove along a river and my dad pointed out a wake in the stream crossing at some speed; we pulled over, stopped and watched as a large river rat swam to shore and walked assuredly up the bank.

Later, after we had paid our admission fee and staked out a lee-side cove under a sweaty tree. I cast my line and hooked a bluegill. I was so excited that I yanked it off the hook, dropped it beside me and tossed my line again.

I did this about 6 or 7 times before my dad remarked that I hadn't baited my hook.

I swear those fish were having as much fun as I was.
