LOS ANGELES - Activists seeking to oust Democratic Gov. Gray Davis said Thursday they have turned in enough signatures for a recall election.

Ted Costa, coordinator of the Republican-led signature drive, said proponents turned in just over 1 million signatures by Thursday morning. Valid signatures from 897,158 registered voters are needed for the recall to make the ballot.

"Kakkake Koi" is the latest fad phrase in Japan....loosely adapted from a Dubbya speech and means:

BRING IT ON

It would be nice if the Republican party leadership would get behind somebody early and tell everyone else to clear out. As far as McClintock is concerned, he is the only Republican who has done well in statewide elections during the last 2 to 3 election cycles -- so I think he deserves the nod for that reason alone. Plus, McClintock is an actual conservative who is able to intellectually defend conservative ideas -- which sometimes seems to be a rarity in this state. Finally, I heard him on Hugh Hewitt the other day when some woman called in and started off the conversation by asking him if he had read her email? Normally, a question like that stops the conversation cold (and is kind of pointless to ask) because, of course, the politician or the talk show host hasn't read his or her email. But in this case, I couldn't believe it. The caller told McClintock that it was a lengthy email about (I believe) the recall effort and McClintock (from memory) started asking her about details that were included in the email, which details the caller confirmed. After about 10 seconds of doing this, McClintock was able to pull up the email and started reading it back to her. I was blown away by that and he gets my vote, along with everyone I can convince, if he runs.

It depends on if you want a fiscal or a social Conservative. Arnold isn't Pat Robertson which will dissapoint some but he IS endorsed by the Club For Growth. It depends if you are in the ilk of the former or the latter.

As long as Arnold promotes a Club For Growth message, I can live with his social liberalism. No one is perfect. If we can get government to live within its means, we can take of our social breakdown of traditional values without the help of Big Brother.

People who've been involved in petition campaigns (as I have) could see from the beginning that the recall effort was well organized, and its signature-gatherers in the street were veterans who knew how to do the job. Furthermore, the regular charts of their progress showed that they knew the "power of numbers."

That means, enough people in the streets, gathering the top number of signatures per hour, times enough days, equals success. Now, step one is done, two months early. (The drop dead deadline was September 2. They've made it by July 4.)

Okay, what happens next? Click below for a solid discussion of that subject.

So far, I'd go with McClintock if I had my druthers.

I agree, but I don't think he has the name recognition.

We face a huge problem here folks. Anyone with $3500 can be on the ballot. If we divide the vote too many ways one even half popular RAT can steal the show.

As long as Arnold promotes a Club For Growth message, I can live with his social liberalism.

How does one reconcile the two, however? Modern liberalism requires lots and lots of money to "do good" with. Arnie has already flunked one midterm by sponsoring that after-school program initiative on the last ballot. Finding new ways to spend money isn't my idea of controlling spending.

"What are Arnold's qualifications? We don't need another *!$&&@#! politician. We need a business manager. "

---

Arnold has a degree in business from the University of Wisconsin. "Schwarzenegger was, in fact, a highly motivated and intelligent young man. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in business and economics, he invested his contest earnings in real estate and a mail-order bodybuilding equipment company." You make a good point. If Arnie tries to be a clone of Davis, he's finished.

That's kinda my view too. We could have a sane Reagan and still not get out of this mess in less than two years. We're screwed and it doesn't seem that the public has any clue as to how bad yet. The biggest problem is that the education budget needs to be cut but nobody realizes that it's 45% of the budget.

And by replacing the governor before things really get bad the wrong party is going to get the blame.

"If we divide the vote too many ways one even half popular RAT can steal the show."

This applies, regardless of when the recall/election is held.

You can bet the dems see this opportunity. There will be just one major dem candidate.

And due to the quest for ideoligical purity, the Republicans will have several. If that is the case, the dem will win, and the whole effort will be wasted.

In the best case, McClintock will be the sole candidate, with STRONG support from ALL other Republicans. Will Issa back down? Will Arnold? Will Riordan?

Big questions, and big consequences. The answer will determine if the party earns and gets to keep the name "the stupid party."

"The biggest problem is that the education budget needs to be cut but nobody realizes that it's 45% of the budget"

And, if I'm not mistaken, that's locked in by another ballot box constitutional measure passed by the voters in either the late 80's or early 90's... Prop 98. Here again, they used celebrities (Jack Lemon and others) to help the teachers unions secure their wasteful, non-productive ways right into the state constitution.

These fanatical groups have never gotten over the Prop 13 tax revolt of 25 years ago and have used and ABUSED the ballot initiative process to really hog-tie this state and make it literally ungovernable. Elected officials are forced into some of the strangest crappola, due to the threat of direct democracy ballot propositions. The ballots get so full of measures, the people begin to stop voting and wonder why we even have elected officials, if the people are required to deliberate over all the really important matters anyway.
