A Patrick Henry College graduate of the inaugural class recently accepted a full-time position at the White House. This job placement is another milestone for the college and a testament to the school's mission of training Christian leaders.
Rebekah McDonald, a 2002 graduate, accepted a position in the Bush Administration as the Executive Assistant to the Director of Strategic Initiatives in the White House. Her responsibilities are administrative and include research and writing assignments as well. Rebekah's position offers her some of the best practical experience possible for someone interested in influencing politics and government.
As a PHC graduate, Rebekah is well aware that her most important assignment comes from an authority higher than even the President of the United States. She has an opportunity to be salt and light in one of the most powerful offices in the world, which is remarkable when you consider that she was a college student just nine months ago.
"This is further proof that the college's vision of training future leaders for tomorrow is a clear reality," said Mike Farris, president of the college. "Our students are already making a difference." PHC faculty and staff are working hard every day training more students who will soon be following in the footsteps of pioneers like Rebekah.
Upon graduating from Patrick Henry last May, Rebekah applied for a White House internship. Not only was she accepted into the internship program, she was also assigned a position in the Office of the Senior Advisor to the President, Karl Rove.
She describes her first day as "insane." Fifteen minutes into her new job, her boss left for a meeting with instructions that Rebekah could interrupt only if the president called. That first day she was briefed on an incredible amount of information.
And with a job like that who could escape highlights? In her third week of work she took a call from the Oval Office. President Bush's secretary called for Mr. Rove, and before McDonald could get Mr. Rove on the line, Bush's secretary patched the president through. "After he hung up I turned to the guy next to me and said, 'Henry, I just talked to the President of the United States!' I started shaking, I was so shocked."
The internship led to her new permanent position within the Administration.
Patrick Henry College is very proud of Rebekah and the other pioneers from her class.

Well, at least from the President.
But aside from that, I'd be quite ambivalent if this were my pretty young daughter. I doubt the majority of the young male staffers share the values of Patrick Henry College. I wonder where she's living?
And I'd also be concerned for my sons in that environment.
Some of the undergraduates at Patrick Henry College stopped by my Ocents.com booth and I must say that I was impressed with those kids.

Sure. Productivity is near an all-time high, especially at daycare centers. ;-)

But what's so weird about being concerned about one's children's chastity, and wanting them to choose marriage over fornication? Patrick Henry College is a very protected environment - that's one reason homeschooling parents choose it. The same is not true of the "scene" of young Washington professionals.
So I wouldn't call it an "unsafe environment," but rather "exposure to temptation." It's not so much the work situation, but the after-work environment.
