Police are investigating a Baylor basketball player in the disappearance of teammate Patrick Dennehy, according to court documents filed this afternoon.

Patrick Dennehy
An affidavit accompanying a warrant to search Dennehy's computer identifies Carlton Dotson, a junior forward on the Baylor basketball team, as a suspect.
Waco Police Chief Alberto Melis said this afternoon that police are treating Dennehy's disappearance as a homicide. He also said that an unidentified person who may have information about the case was also a member of the Baylor community, but he did not mention the team specifically, nor did he identify any suspects.
But the affidavit released by a state district judge this afternoon said that police in Delaware had received information from an informant tying Dotson to the disappearance.
The document says that, according to a police informant, Dotson told his cousin that he and Dennehy were out shooting guns in McLennan County earlier this month and had an argument. The document says that Dennehy pointed a gun at Dotson, and that Dotson then shot Dennehy in the head with a 9 mm pistol.
According to the informant, Dotson said that he then drove home to Hurlock, Md., disposing of the guns on the way.
Waco police mentioned none of this at a 4 p.m. press conference today. Melis said only that the disappearance of the 21-year-old Dennehy "is being investigated as if he were a victim of a homicide."
Dennehy, 6-foot-10-inch, 230-pound center who sat out last season after transferring from the University of New Mexico, has been missing since June 12 or June 13.
Investigators have been questioning members of the Baylor basketball team. Dotson has not been arrested.
Last week, Waco detectives also flew to Virginia Beach Thursday to examine an SUV found without license plates in a strip mall, said Virginia Beach Police spokesman Jimmy Barnes.
Officers also have searched Dennehy's Waco apartment at least twice in recent days, officials said. On one occasion, investigators armed with the search warrant examined a computer from the apartment.

Affidavit: Missing player killed by teammate07/01/2003
WACO Missing Baylor basketball player Patrick Dennehy was shot and killed in McLennan County by a roommate and former teammate, who then drove to the East Coast, dumping the gun along the way, according to a court document released Monday.
The search warrant affidavit, submitted June 23 to a judge by Waco police as part of a request for a warrant to search the missing players computer, states that former Baylor forward Carlton Dotson told a family member at his home in Hurlock, Md., that he shot Mr. Dennehy in the head with a 9mm pistol after an argument. The information came from a relative of Mr. Dotson, the affadavit said.
Investigators declined to comment Monday on the details of the document, which was obtained by The Dallas Morning News. At a news event Monday afternoon, Waco Police Chief Alberto Melis offered no new details about the investigation.
The case is currently still classified as a missing persons case but because of the information being received in regards to Mr. Dennehys disappearance, this case is being investigated as if he were the victim of a homicide, said Chief Melis, who declined to answer questions about the case, speaking in an auditorium packed with reporters at the convention center here.
In the statement, Chief Melis made no mention of Baylor basketball or potential suspects, saying that it was normal for investigators to interview people close to the missing person. He cautioned that people should not assume that anyone interviewed was a suspect. The warning came three days after his department caused a sensation here by saying Friday in a statement that some of Mr. Dennehys teammates were being questioned about in his possible slaying.
Mr. Dotson, contacted at his home Friday night before the affadavit became public information, told The Dallas Morning News that he had talked to Waco police on Friday and "I told them everything I can tell them and everything I knew. They were saying not to really talk to anyone.
He said he first found out that Mr. Dennehy was missing through Mr. Dennehys girlfriend.

Informant: Baylor Player Shot by Teammate
By ANGELA K. BROWN, Associated Press Writer WACO, Texas - A police informant in Delaware told authorities that missing Baylor University basketball player Patrick Dennehy was shot in the head with a 9 mm handgun by a former teammate after the two had an argument, according to court documents released Monday.
The teammate and former roommate, Carlton Dotson, told a cousin that he got in an argument with Dennehy while they were shooting guns in the Waco area and that Dennehy pointed a gun at Dotson as if to shoot him, the informant said.
But Dotson instead shot Dennehy in the head with the pistol, the informant said. Dotson said he then drove home to Hurlock, Md., and got rid of the guns along the way, the informant said.
The search warrant affidavit released Monday was filed June 23 in 19th District Court in McLennan County by Waco police detective Bob Fuller.
District Attorney John Segrest declined to comment Monday, referring questions to Waco police. Fuller did not return a phone call to The Associated Press on Monday.
A message was left on an answering machine at Dotson's home in Maryland.
Dennehy was reported missing by his family on June 19, and his sport utility vehicle, its license plates missing, was found last week in a mall parking lot in Virginia Beach, Va.
Waco Police Chief Alberto Melis said no body had been found and no arrests had been made. Melis would not elaborate on any evidence.
Melis said officers were treating the disappearance like a homicide because his department got a call "from an outside source" that said a homicide had occurred in the Waco area and the victim could be associated with a local university. |
