Columbus - Don't bother to shop yet for a shoulder or ankle holster.
A bill that would permit Ohioans to carry concealed guns is stalled at least until the fall, when legislators return from summer recess.
House lawmakers were unable in the past two days to reconcile differences in the bill with Gov. Bob Taft and the Ohio Highway Patrol.
Troopers want restrictions, added by the Senate, that require motorists to display guns or lock them up and that eliminate an allowed defense that would let a motorist prove he needed a gun without a permit.
The impasse angered Republican House Speaker Larry Householder, who said Senate leaders gave too much control to Taft, who had said he would not sign a bill opposed by the patrol and other law enforcement agencies. The patrol and the Ohio Fraternal Order of Police are neutral on the Senate's version.
Householder had called for a conference committee of both chambers to fix differences.
"The Senate has given the authority for negotiations to the governor," Householder said. "I guess I'll be talking to the governor. He is our new lawmaker."
The bill would permit Ohioans to apply for a license to carry a concealed handgun.
John Hohenwarter, state liaison for the influential National Rifle Association, said the Senate's version is too restrictive. He wants the bill reconsidered later.
"We favor keeping the process moving and trying to come up with language that we can be comfortable with," Hohenwarter said.

This is not a "ping" list (no one maintains a list of interested FReepers). It is a do-it-yourself, see-what's-been-bumped-to-it list. Anyone can bump an article to the list by sending it To: *bang_list Then, interested FReepers can (bookmark and) check the list periodically to see new articles. Please do not ask me to "add you to the list." It doesn't work like that. This is better than a ping list because (1) anyone can bump an article to the list, and any interested parties can see the list of articles 24x7.

It sounds like someone better start writing letters to the police associations. Do they really want a law that states a driver of a vehicle should keep a loaded gun inches away on the passenger seat? Are they eager to kill law abiding drivers reaching for their insurance papers? How many calls to 911 do they want reporting "Man with a gun" while someone is trying to obey the ridiculous law they support?

right. I carry <evil music> black guns </evil music> and I'd just love to set them in the sun on the leather seats in my vette on a sunday drive around the city with the top down.
not only would it not be rapidly and safely accessible at a traffic light, it would be about 350 degrees. brilliant.
oh... and certainly I'd never space out a bit and leave it on the seat </blond> while I run into 7-11. gawd.
I suppose when enough marxists move up here to Utah from PRK, I can move to Alaska.

I suppose this means that the good citizens of Ohio are now free to carry ala Vermont and Alaska-style with no restrictions and no permit required since the Ohio courts have declared Ohio's non-carry laws to be unconstitutional?

Troopers want restrictions, added by the Senate, that require motorists to display guns or lock them up and that eliminate an allowed defense that would let a motorist prove he needed a gun without a permit. I guess they want to avoid the wholesale slaughter of police officers that has occured in the 34 "shall-issue" states and Vermont, where citizens don't even need a license to carry and therefore presumably hunt highway patrolmen for sport.
The fact that Ohio is in the minority on CCW is a result of the deliberate stupidity of its leaders, and, apparently its highway patrol.

I just hung the phone up with fiveshooter and he picked up his Old Army today. The Vaquero Bisley was the last gun he bought just two weeks ago. I'll have to wait until morning to ask.

Taft is a RINO, he lied about not raising taxes, has ballooned the state budget, and this is the latest topper although he has been stopping a measure like this since he has been in office.
