"Renegade? You mean he goes in without the woman's permission"

I mean he takes an innocent human life, something doctors are, I believe, sworn not to do.

Besides, what validity can be assigned to anyone's permission to take an innocent human life? The KGB had Krushchev's permission to torture suspects; does that make it all right?

"Forcing women to take unwanted pregnancies to term doesn't faze you a bit, does it?"

No, not even a bit. That it does "faze" you says only that you are willing to allow the wanton killing of innocent human beings for no better reason than someone else's convenience. I'm hard pressed to think of a notion more morally corrupt than that one.

Surely you can be more introspective and thoughtful on this on an issue that causes so many great pain. I know you can do it. I have seen you do it. You can do better. You need to graple with what state of the fetus is deserving of legal protection, or not, and why, and then discuss an intelligent balancing test. Until you do that, you will just enrage and energize your opposition. My point of view is to try to calm things down, and try to find an intelligent compromise, that at least will mitigate the poison this issue excretes into the public square. I think my way is better. And you will get no where on this issue without being totally honest and fair to the points made by the other side in the sense of seriously considering their arguments. And such arguments deserve serious consideration. JMO, and one based on close to 35 years now of experience. I was there at the creation.

If one is introspective and thoughtful about this issue, one gets thoroughly depressed. It's no wonder those who condone abortion don't want to do that. Ya know, hafta avoid feeling uncomfortable or being inconvenienced in any way.

Not to me, Torie. Every time I have been on an abortion thread, the prolife side has gone immediately to ad hominem and stayed there. Personal attack seems to be the only way they can think of to deal with someone who values liberty over religion. Two incompatible mindsets, I think. As a result, I don't bring much sympathy to the table, nor do I remain there for long. It is a tar baby, with no side affecting the beliefs of the other, no matter how long it goes on.

I thank you for your post, but I'm not quite sure where/how you see any place for compromise?

someone who values liberty over religion.

At what point should the community protect the individual?

I have attracted few flames on the issue myself, and I take a middle position, probably not shared by more than about 25% or so of Freepers that post. So, perhaps there is something that lacks sensitivity and nuance in the way you express yourself on the issue. Perhaps not.

I am kind of a trimester, continuum kind of guy, with parental notification mandatory except for a court order where patental abuse is proven. I focus on the sentience of the fetus. It is not for everybody, but I think that is where the vital center is on this issue. And we need to clean out the detritus of court activism on this issue, so that it can be discussed and voted upon in the public square. JMO.

Agreed. Just saw that book that came out on a webpage. "_Their Blood Cries Out_"

I remember one day back in 1988 I was babysitting at my sister's house and a news story came on about a family whose kids had all been killed by the daughter's jealous boyfriend. He'd taken the set of steak knives in the kitchen and slaughtered the teenage girl, her little 9 yr old sister, and 3 yr old brother, with them. The parents were out to dinner and came home to find police in their front yard. They actually showed footage of the father's reaction at the moment they told him what had happened. The wife just fell to the ground. He was a big tough looking man and started screaming and crying and was generally just beside himself. I was so disturbed I could do nothing but lie flat on the floor and cry for mercy for this country for at least an hour.

and we saction doing this same thing in this country... every... single... day...

bingo. Especially that last sentence.

I always have to laugh incredulously when people say "now that I have kids, I personally am pro life but I wouldn't force that decision on anyone else..."

I think we are in agreement. The fetal sentience, IMO, is why abortion in the early weeks is accetable, but partial birth abortion is murder.

Once the individual is sentient. That is, PBA is murder, but not abortion before sentience.

Ok, good now we're getting somewhere. When would sentience occur?
