Bush Says He Has Not Lost Hope for Mideast Peace

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (AP) - President Bush said Sunday he has not lost hope for peace in the Middle East but insisted the world must deal harshly with terrorists to keep them from undoing a peace plan he helped restart just days ago.

Bush said he wants to help the Palestinians rein in terrorists, but he stopped short of pledging money or arms to the Palestinian Authority to aid it in combating terror groups like Hamas.

Pressed on what aid the Bush administration might provide, he said the United States is helping the Palestinian leadership complete a strategy for reconstituting its security forces "in order to make sure the terrorists, the haters of peace, those who can't stand freedom, do not have their way in the Middle East."

The remarks, spoken as he left church, were Bush's first on the Middle East since he arrived in Maine for a long Father's Day weekend with his family. Bush said he saw an apparent break in the surge of violence that followed a peace summit in Aqaba, Jordan, earlier this month. But he acknowledged the gravity of the job.

"I'm confident we can achieve peace," he said. "It's going to be a tough road, but I am determined to continue to lend the weight of this government to advance peace."

Bush, at a June 4 summit in Jordan with Israeli and Palestinians leaders, helped initiate a plan, known as the road map, which specified an immediate end to 32 months of violence simultaneously with moves by Israel to stop building of Jewish settlements in occupied territories. The goal was creation of a Palestinian state, living in peace alongside Israel, by 2005.

Since that meeting, renewed violence - capped by a bus bombing by Hamas and a string of Israeli helicopter raids with rocket aimed at Hamas leaders - has killed 63 people, mainly civilians on both sides. The difficulty of ending the violence was apparent earlier Sunday by a firefight between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians in a Gaza town, in which a Palestinian was killed and seven others wounded.

The first contingent of U.S. monitors to supervise implementation of the peace plan arrived in the region Sunday. The team is led by Assistant Secretary of State John Wolf. Secretary of State Colin Powell and representatives of the United Nations, Russia and the European Union, which worked on the peace blueprint, plan talks in Jordan this week.

"The way for us to have two states, side-by-side, is for everybody coming together to deny the killers the opportunity to destroy," Bush said. "And that's what they want to do. There are people in the Middle East who hate the thought of a peaceful Palestinian state. That's what they can't stand.

"It is clear that the free world, those who love freedom and peace must deal harshly with Hamas and the killers. And that's just the way it is in the Middle East."

The United States is trying to bolster the ability of Mahmoud Abbas, the new prime minister of the Palestinian Authority, to deal with the terrorists, but the recent wave of violence has prompted questions whether he can truly check terrorism. That has led to discussion of whether the United States should send military aid to the Palestinians.

Not yet, Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., said Sunday.

"It's always a possibility," Lugar, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said on "Fox News Sunday." "But having said that, I would just say this is down the trail.

"We have to be very, very careful about the use of American forces," whether they are deployed alone or with other forces, such as peacekeeping operations sponsored by NATO or the United Nations. "But clearly, if force is required ultimately to rout out terrorism, it is possible that there will be an American participation."

The rhetoric is almost identical to Clinton. The policies are almost identical to Clinton. George W. Bush has been renamed to George W. Clinton.

As long as we deal harshly with Saudi terrorists as we do with Iraqis and al-Qaeda
no problem..
But to deal with all terrorists except the Saudi brand of Wahhabis
And allow oil money to buy our politicans leaders and institution
to allow them to build mosques and islamic centers accross our nation
and allow them to buy up the countryside
is not dealing harsly with terrorists..it is acting as their agents imo

I believe this is a reporter talking.  Oh brother!!!!

Since that meeting, renewed violence - capped by a bus bombing by Hamas and a string of Israeli helicopter raids with rocket aimed at Hamas leaders - has killed
63 people, mainly civilians on both sides.

Here we they go again equating what Israel has done to what terrorists have done.  Here are some points that reveal what a crock that is.

1. Israel targets the perpetrators and supporters of terrorism.  The terrorist target civilians, mainly women and children. See why I say this, just below.
      a. The buses are full of school kids
      b. The malls, markets and coffee shops are full of mostly women and children
      c. When snipers take people out, it's most often women and children in their sights
2. When there is peace for several weeks, the Israelis are not the ones who strike.  Cycles of violence are 'always' started by terrorists, in every instance!

For decades we have watched silently as reporters compare Israel's actions to the terrorists, as if they are the same.  They ARE NOT THE SAME.

Now check this out.

The United States is trying to bolster the ability of Mahmoud Abbas, the new prime minister of the Palestinian Authority, to deal with the terrorists, but the recent
wave of violence has prompted questions whether he can truly check terrorism. That has led to discussion of whether the United States should send military aid to
the Palestinians.

Wait just a --- ------ mintute.  Since when did we sign on to sending military aid ever?  If we're talking about some assitance to their police force, I might be inclined to support it on a limited basis.  Agreeing to send military aid is just tantamount to arming Israels enemies to the teeth, then training them how to be the most effective troops they can be.

Would we ever stand for someone doing something like this for our enemies?

Who comes up with this stuff?  And I use that word stuff, under duress!

Then do as you say. Support the destruction of them. Why is the US telling Israel to negotiate with the PA? They are terrorists through your doctrine, "those who harbor, incite, fund, sponsor, terrorists are terrorists." Why are there US envoys talking about a cease-fire with Israel and allowing the PA terrorists to guard against...terrorism? The roadmap has one MAJOR flow, and that is that the "Palestinian" party is is terrorist entity.

Um, President Bush is pushing to have all monies flowing to HAMAS halted. I'm not sure what that will do in the long run, but it's a beginning. One small step at a time.

You are correct. I am sick and tired of this, and it is therefore why I have stopped making these comments.

That has led to discussion of whether the United States should send military aid to the Palestinians.

Already happening, courtesy CIA, and also lack of sanctions on the PA.

This has always been the policy of the United States. The put Hamas on a list of terrorists in the mid 1990s. That is not new. What is needed is the classification of the PA-PLO as a terrorist organization, sanctions on the PLO-PA, and the closing down of their offices in DC.

Long live Yisrael - the Almighty's real estate will forever be the land of Israel, for Israel, it is not up for sale, transfer or any kind of plan.

From what I heard President Bush saying this morning, I guess HE"S GOING TO ACTUALLY MAKE THE STATE DEPARTMENT ENFORCE IT. Actual policy is one thing. Getting the knuckleheads at State to comply is a whole different thing. Also, Rummy will begin to come back in the picture. President Bush is starting to realize that Rummy was right.

If an undiscerning KOOK changes George W. Bush's name to George W. Clinton, will anyone other than another undiscerning KOOK applaud?
