THE WORLD'S SCARIEST PLACE

BILL Clinton, who knew little of soldiering, got it exactly right once about Korea, calling its DMZ (demilitarized zone) the "scariest place in the world." Year after year, as entire decades go by, and its veterans age and die off, Korea remains "the forgotten war," a neglected if savage incident overshadowed by that great event of the century, World War II, and by Vietnam, no more deadly than Korea, but longer-lasting and, at home, darker and more bitterly divisive.

pray not, but pray more that any time the politicians send our boys to war they are willing to sacrifice their political careers to back the soldiers and fight to win. America should fight rarely, but let all know that we fight to the end.

I for one am tired of the US pussy-footing with these rogue states. I hope we clean their clocks soon so the world can move on.

Isn't the Korean War technically still being fought? A ceasefire agreement is not the same as ending the war completely.

In the last two years I've spent time with our troops in the DMZ and Kosovo and I've travelled in Israel. I would put the DMZ third on my own list of scary places.

When you get combat pay, it's not technical.

In my own experience since 9.11 I would order the scariest places as Israel, Kosovo then the DMZ (I was at Bonifas for a while). Of course it depends on where in Israel you are. Down south where we have a small contingent of Marines is pretty quiet, almost dull. But near/in Nazareth and Jerusalem things can get pretty hairy, at least there is a tension that never quite leaves. Foot and mechanized patrol outside Bondsteel in Kosovo gets dicey sometimes too. A lot goes on that doesn't make the media.

I'm sure that there are far scarier places...Chechnya, the Congo, Baghdad, etc., but I haven't been there.
