Is Free Republic too "Republican?" I've been receiving a lot of complaints lately that FR is not really conservative, it's Republican. Is that a bad thing?
When I started FR (see the wayback machine) I don't think I even used the labels conservative or Republican. But, even though I was a registered Democrat at the time (I registered when I was very young), I was definitely anti-Democrat. And definitely anti-big government, anti-government corruption, anti-government abuse, anti-liberalism, etc. And I still am.
As FR became more and more popular, people started referring to it as a "conservative" web site and so eventually I posted the label to the front page. If it no longer applies, big deal. What's in a label? I'll change it to "Republican" if demand warrants.
I'm still anti-big government, anti-government corruption, anti-Democrat and anti-liberalism. I just happen to believe that in the current political environment we stand a better chance of defeating the left (liberalism/socialism/marxism, etc) by using the Republican Party to defeat the Democrats. The organization is there. The platform is there. The winning candidates are there. The dollars to run winning campaigns are there. The momentum is there. And the vast majority of the conservative voters are there.
Makes perfect sense to me. I want to defeat the left, and I want to do it as quickly as possible. I'll go with the organization that can get the job done.
My current goal is to defeat liberalism by defeating the Democrat Party. If that labels me a Republican, then so be it. If the vast majority of the FReepers want it so, then Free Republic will officially become the newest "Republican wing" of the Republican Party.
Long live Republicanism. Long live the Republic!'
What say you, FReepers?
Our nation is not a democracy, contrary to your early statements. Our nation is not about political parties contrary to your statements. Our nation was built upon individual liberties, freedoms and rights ... and the Constitution guarantees protection from government intrusion about our dignities; hence our republic was born.
But the fact that you buy off on a century and a half of republican/democrat political party squandering of our republic foundations that is not written into the Constitution reflects everything about your enthusiasm to restore the Constitution. All you are doing is saying that you believe in pragmatic or empirical guidelines by some of the world's greatest a**-h***s that America has ever produced to destroy our great nation.
You have no historical knowledge about the foundations of our once great nation, sir. Indeed, your post appears to be written by the almost daily talking heads that chat upon the popular media airwaves of ABC,CBS,FOX,NBC and CNN.
I will think more about your post#905 and respond; you obviously put some time into it. But so far, you remind me of Alfred E. Neuman/Joesph Stalin/Che Guevara/George Walker Bush and all kinds of anti-constitutionalists that are obviously against our republic constitutional form of government in the USA.
Best Regards! Buckeroo
I also have a few questions for Mr Keyes regarding some money that disappeared from his campaign. I wonder if he would answer them...
The best way to change a parties direction is from within.
No.
Bookmarked.
If it means that the next 10 months this forum will be filled with shills promoting McCain as a "conservative" and demanding we give him our vote, yes.
bttt!
No need. Your current site poll provides you the answer.
BTTT
This has been on my home page as long as I can remember.
Voting for Republicans is only a result of my beliefs, not the reason for my beliefs.
Just as you were a democrat for a while because that’s how you voted when you were younger, so too, young voters who are signing up to vote in this election may be willing to join the GOP because they are in the military, have friends in the military, or just think John McCain is right about the war. And then, because they are willing to identify as Republican, they will end up voting for conservatives from time to time and we will have more people in the party. And that would be a good thing.
BTTT,
hope that isn't whining!
Jim, I have been here for a while and the reason has never changed. It’s because I am a conservative in the depths of my heart and will continue to vote and work to do away with the liberalism that has a grip on this Republic. And I found those of like mind here. ;-)
Thank you for holding the liberals feet to the fire, even as we see the ups and downs of the party of conservatism.
We will survive.
All those that whine and complain, have plenty to whine and complain about. And hopefully these will see the light of day before it’s too late.
There is more to be concerned about if the other side is voted in, than on our side.
But the desire to punish the GOP is a strong one and maybe as voting time draws near, mature thinking will reign over that desire. Because the nation itself will be the biggest loser.
Not the Republican party.
All we can do is pray for our country!
Some things have changed, but the vast majority of the conservative voters are still there.
Two choices. Stay and fight or cut, run and scatter.
Thank you Jim, for your views, your commitment and your tolerance of the numerous hills and valleys conservative Republicans have experienced since making this website available. I especially appreciate your thoughts on this matter!
I may be a new ‘poster’ but I’ve been a loyal fan since ‘98. This forum has provided the greatest political education anyone could hope for.....and proves on a daily basis that the Republican party is HONESTLY the ‘thinking man’s party’. We don’t always agree on process but the vast majority of us agree on core principles.
In short......WE ROCK!

Yeah. What you said!
I think FR is just fine the way it is, in that regard.
