Classic case of downsizing (Disney/PIXAR PC redit of animated shorts)

Something strange is abreast with Knickknack, the critically acclaimed 1989 short that precedes Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo at theaters nationwide.

The short follows the hapless attempts of a lonely snow-globe snowman to escape his domain and join a plastic Miami beach bunny. The movie was released on a G-rated 1996 video collection called Tiny Toy Stories. But in that version, the Miami beauty and a mermaid who appears at the end of the short were more well-endowed than they are today.

So many wonderful Looney Tunes gone simply because of the way characters were drawn or depicted. So stupid!

The Disney Channel has been showing "Dumbo." I haven't watched it all the way through, but I was suprised to see it on.

Disney also changed the words to the opening song of Aladdin after it was released. The narrator was singing and made a reference to "having your hand cut off." I think the words were in the theatrical release and edited out when it went to video. (I may have my timing wrong).

Oh, yeah...when I was a child, among the Popeye cartoons that the local TV station (OK, it was out of Joplin, Missouri, and I was in Bentonville, Arkansas) played in the afternoons was at least one of WWII vintage. I remember the closing line of a song from it ("You're a sap, sap, sap, Mr. Jap"), and I'm sure that it included very politically incorrect depictions of Japanese soldiers. I'm equally sure that they wouldn't dare show it on TV today.

A search of "Disney Censorship" brings up a lot of matches of people who have a beef about Disney's revision of works. In addition to their own cartoons and features (and even recent tv series), they butcher Hong Kong films (under their "artistic" branch, Miramax).

I also found this online indicating that Modern Disney also re-edited old comic book art (by Walt "Pogo" Kelly") to eliminate cigarettes, knives, etc. The PC police march on.
