Teachers' poor pay just myth
Scottsdale Republic ^ | Craig J. Cantoni

Edited on 05/07/2004 5:21:23 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

Contrary to union propaganda, teachers are not underpaid. I say this as someone with 28 years of experience in conducting salary surveys and designing pay plans.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, local elementary school teachers earn about the same average pay on an hourly basis as local reporters ($23.74). They also earn more than microbiologists ($20.60), zoologists ($17.36) and accountants ($22.49). Secondary school teachers even earn more per hour than civil engineers.

Great quote!

That should be a Quote of the Day... who is that FReeper that does that?

I don't know...

Actually, that is kind of adapted from something that a friend of mine says, but since he isn't a Freeper, I'm sure he wouldn't mind me using it.

Even so, he deserves credit.

All I have talked about is my personal experience. I gave you my background, described to you why I felt the way I did ,and then sumerized what I have learned throughout my life.

Who do know that can provide a link to those kinds of things.

Who do you know who doesn't make comments upon what they know from personal experience.

You two sure want people to believe what you say based upon your personal experiences in teaching. Do you teach your kids that just because something happened before their own eyes, they should never make any assumtions. If you do you don't teach math or science I presume.

Not all women.
Some are very nice, some are nice when you play the games they want to play, by the rules as they have set them. Some are nice when you give them gifts, and some are nice when you say what they want to hear. Some really do care about other people, and actually do things for other people. Some women just run around in circles and expect everyone to join in. Some women want to solve problems. Those women I like.

Still a destruction of the current education system would garner immediate benefits not to be felt with any other reform this side of a time warp.

Education is not about teachers or administrators or taxes, it is about our future in freedom and the current system steals that from us generation by generation.

For many FReepers, destruction of the current education system wouldn't matter. Many either homeschool or send their children to private school anyway - and if they don't, they are capable of doing so.

On the other hand, most of the students I teach are of very low socioeconomic level. Their parents would not be able to afford private schools, and many of the parents aren't capable of homeschooling, either because of their working hours or because of their own lack of education.

For these students, public schools, while not perfect, offer the only available opportunity for an education and a chance at a better life.

For this reason, even though I don't believe the Federal government should be involved in education, I do support the "No Child Left Behind" initiative - I hope it will do away with some of the social promotion and other administrative/liberal programs that have helped bring education to its current low level.

I did not say destruction of Public education.

I did say destruction of the current education system.

I am okay with local run/paid Public education, even State run/paid public education. Though a parent should be able to educate their child the way they see fit.

I am against the way children are educated (processed and packaged), I am against the way it is paid for, I am against teachers unions, I am against Government setting standards of education, I am against force attendance and I am against bureaucrats with more power than parents.

Not this system, not this way.

Do not defend it, it will only encourage them.

I have seen the salary schedule here.

Just over 20,000 to start. Man that sure is raking in the dough.

Don't you realize that it takes decades to move up to the top salary position in teaching? This isn't like any other job where you can move up from low pay pretty quickly. And you can't move unless you want to get knocked all the way back down at another school.

You are stuck after some point once you have a family etc.

Doug Wilson has noted---Farsighted Christians in the nineteenth century saw what was coming. The founders of the government schools were hostile to the historic Christian faith from the very beginning. R.L. Dabney was able to predict in the nineteenth century that all Bibles, prayers and catechisms would ultimately be driven out of the schools. A.A. Hodge said that if the government schools were established, they would prove to be the greatest engine for propagation of atheism that the world had ever seen.

No Child Left Behind is an incredible burden on teachers and makes it even harder to get bad kids out of the classroom.

The model for our current Public Education system was pulled right from the heart of socialist states.

I want to stop talking about the salaries - data is availible and we all know that is varies from state to state, district to district.

The System is what people are upset with. The salaries are only a flash point (Do you like paying good money for a crappy product?).
