A fetus in its 24th week of development has been aborted by doctors who said the life of the mother - a retarded, deaf and seizure-prone rape victim - would be threatened if the baby was carried to full term, an attorney said Friday. The abortion and tubal ligation to prevent future pregnancies were performed late Thursday at Jackson Memorial Hospital, said Lance Block, who represents the disabled woman's mother. Miami-Dade police took DNA samples from the fetus in an effort to identify the father, whom officials believe raped the 28-year-old woman, he said. The victim is "doing well" despite the tragedy she has been a part of, he said. In a statement released Thursday by Miami-Dade Circuit Court, the judge who oversaw the case, Arthur Rothenberg, said the disabled woman's mother strongly objected to any other solutions. She "did not want her daughter to be subjected to any more of an invasive procedure than was absolutely necessary to terminate the pregnancy and for a tubal ligation," Rothenberg said.

The baby was viable at 24 weeks (even at 22 weeks) and each week they could have waited would have increased the baby's chances for a normal life according to this link at the American Academy of Pediatrics:
http://www.aap.org/policy/010107.html The doctor's could have induced labor immediately, or in a couple of weeks, instead of slaughtering another helpless innocent "developing normally". I doubt that an abortion was medically any less risky than an induced labor would have been on this victimized and retarded woman. Meanwhile another couple waits in vain to adopt a baby.

"Centuries before Christ, Solomon advised, "Say not, `Why were the former days better than these?' For it is not from wisdom that you ask this" (Ecc. 7:10). "
I like this one the best of all the examples you posted. Every generation has those who, without really thinking, exclaim that things have never been worse. I dismiss all such statements as being made in ignorance and fear.

And the reverse, of course.

"Why do you say he'll be off the hook?"
Off the hook financially.
Wanna bet that unions protect the rapist, no DNA tests possible?

A grandmother, a judge, a doctor, several assistants, at least one lawyer and a public inured to horror against a 20 ounce baby.
The kid never had a chance.

"Are people on the this post really saying a retarded girl with the mental capacity of a four year old SHOULD become a mother? What the hell is wrong with you people?"
Some are so caught up in the "no abortion at any cost" side of the discussion that they cannot see the horror of this poor soul who is pregnant by a sick rapist. They don't see this sad young girl...they only see their own perspective. Feh!

FWIW I've always thought it was probably the pro-death crowd that was making adoption so difficult. If they can render it nearly impossible for adoption, no demand...no demand...no babies needed...therefore more abortions. IMHO.

"out and out, blasphemy"
Actually, no. I'm an atheist, so it is impossible for me to blaspheme. My point is that if there were some deity out there, it has shown no evidence that it's coming down to wreak havoc on us because we're so evil.
Lots of evil has been done in the world. No sign of that second coming everyone keeps talking about.
An atheist cannot blaspheme.

She "did not want her daughter to be subjected to any more of an invasive procedure than was absolutely necessary to terminate the pregnancy and for a tubal ligation," Rothenberg said. There's nothing more invasive than inserting knives into a woman's womb and dismembering the child within.

Thank you for that information, I was so confused by the remarks of the reporters stating the the woman had no relatives one time and then the next time talking about the mother of the handicapped woman. I had no idea that there were two cases.

You don't find anything wrong w/ a judge ORDERING an Abortion to kill a viable baby that could be put up for adoption? From the article: "doctors who said the life of the mother - a retarded, deaf and seizure-prone rape victim - would be threatened if the baby was carried to full term." And it was not the judge who ordered the abortion, it was the retarded woman's mother, who is her legal guardian.

"I'm going to assume you didn't see the other thread on this. It contains some real winners from the "no abortion at any cost" team! "
There are so many such threads. I rarely engage with extreme pro-life advocates. I've known some of them, including one who changed his tune when his 13-year-old daughter turned up pregnant. It's really easy to determine what somebody else ought to do, I suppose.

WOW! I like that. Permission to use?

No problem. I get called a blasphemer all the time.

Meanwhile another couple waits in vain to adopt a baby. Except it's not their baby. The baby is not the property of the community to be passed around or sold to the highest bidder. I'd really like to see a solution from the pro-lifers instead of all this gnashing of teeth.
