Hollywood Legend Jane Russell Slams Abortion In Interview

LONDON, May 28, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The UK Life League, a British pro-life group has reported that Jane Russell, the 1940s and '50s Hollywood movie star and pin-up girl, now aged 82, gave an interview this week slamming abortion. "People should never, ever have an abortion. Don't talk to me about it being a woman's right to choose what she does with her own body. The choice is between life and death," said Russell.

Describing her shock at finding herself pregnant at 18: "The only solution was to find a quack and get an abortion. I had a botched abortion and it was terrible. Afterwards my own doctor said: 'What butcher did this to you?' I had to be taken to hospital. I was so ill I nearly died. I've never known pain like it." Russell says that due to the abortion she was not able to have any other children.

I, like many others, am the thankful product of an unplanned pregnancy. My amazing wife was born to a sixteen year-old unwed mother. I would like to commend my mother, my mother-in-law, and all the other brave women who have recognized that abortion is murder.

WOW! Hildy I never concidered you to be callous. That statement is very cold and without feeling. I have a hard time believing you are being truthful in that you have never concidered what your child would have looked like.

Unfortunately, most well-raised "women" don't usually find themselves on the bridge of choosing to murder a baby or their freedom and convenience. It's typically naiive, uninformed, self-centered, spoiled "girls" who cannot responsibly handle the consequences of THEIR behavior and who probably and sadly didn't have a close traditional family culture of conscience around them for guidance who commit this dastardly act. IMHO, the family culture, however, is no excuse for killing a life. "They made me do it," will be little solace to a woman experiencing the pain in her soul for her act or the loss of a life decades later.

Arguably, there are girls who have matured into women with the same mindset of the spoiled girl who can't be inconvenienced with the consequences of their behavior or lack the character that it takes to do the right thing for SOMEONE ELSE, other than themselves.

All decisions have consequences .. sooner or later, and I find it difficult to believe that anyone with any semblance of a conscience wouldn't find that decision painful to admit ... maybe not until they're 50 or 60 or when they're facing death .. but I think there is an eternal, inextricable link to something so precious as a human being, a life that a woman was actually carrying in her body. Call it God, call it Mother Nature .. the body remembers what the mind may will to forget.

I'm not fighting with you, haven't lectured you and haven't given you a link. I observed you're speaking from one experience: yours. Why so defensive with me?

Abortions have been becoming more uncommon, since women who had them began sharing their pain and regret with others. It just took a while for the word to get out to the general public, because the leftist propaganda machine frowns upon dissenting points of view.

I can honestly say that it was one of the most depressing experiences I've ever had -- I still morn the loss of the little one who might have been. My husband forced me to have one more than 20 years ago. To make things worse he laughed about it and made fun of me in public. Needless to say he is no longer my husband -- he's someone else's problem. Poor dear.

Other women that I have spoken to about abortion feel the same way I do. The experience was horrible and painfully depressing.

I just want to offer my humble opinion here.

I have a strong belief (much stronger than "belief"...it is something which is more like a "knowing") that if a woman regrets it, and makes no effort to justify the action before her Creator, asks for forgiveness, then by Grace, and the infinite mercy of God, she is washed clean. Our Father is very forgiving if we make an error and repent. Regret is an honest impulse leading us to learn some very hard lessons at times. That regret can be used to bring us closer to our Creator.

The problem that sooooo many of these women have, and where they get stuck is that they feel that they CANNOT forgive themselves. The twisted thinking goes like, what gives me the right to stop punishing myself? This can cause a range of responses. If a woman feels she cant forgive herself, she may be despairing that she could ever be close to God again. She may not even be consciously aware that this is what she is doing. She has such disdain and despair, that she denies the pain, denies the darkness, shame and guilt of the act. It is a psychological necessity if she is running from the pain. She may even persist in erroneous actions. If this is the road she picks, then it may very well be that she may have to cross to the other side to learn the truth of the matter and be held accountable.

Or, she may acknowledge the pain, but still live a life of grief and regret, as in the example of a Jane Russell. Again, as I said, my own opinion.

Hildy, I am not making the assumption that some on this thread have, that you actually experienced this yourself. I have been active in the health care profession for a number of years and it is something that I accept as a given based on MANY women I've come into contact with, (and some reading and research) that they have feelings of deep regret if they have had an abortion. My guess is that the ones you have encountered who seem not to have that regret, have hardened their hearts because the pain is so deep and searing. I have seen this too. I have compassion for them, and pray that by God's grace, they may be lifted out of that pain and suffering and find peace once more.

Thank you. Actually, this will be our third grandkid, but he or she (it was a little too soon at the time of the ultrasound) is definitely gonna be spoiled.

Not really. We don't know her history - there could have been good reason, like rape - but a single experience does NOT qualify one to speak for 'most' women.
