Barbra Streisand's Meltdown
The National Enquirer | June 3, 2003 (Current Issue) | Patricia Shipp, Patricia Towle, Alan Smith and Maggie Harbour

Posted on 05/26/2003 1:46:50 PM PDT by 7 x 77

A hearbroken Barbra Streisand has suffered a shocking breakdown -- triggered by an overwhelming concern for her only child, who's stricken with the deadly AIDS virus.

The superstar's fiercely independent son Jason Gould, 36, is resisting his mother's efforts to take control of his treatment and get him to move from New York to her side in Los Angeles.

Although devoted Barbra is acting out of love, the family drama has left the Hollywood legend heartsick, emotionally drained, and unable to sleep, say sources.

On top of that, the singer is terrified that Jason will develop full-blown AIDS, and she's butting heads with him over his desire to speak out publicly about his illness.

When his press-shy mother instructed him not to grant interviews, Jason lashed out -- telling her there was no way he'd knuckle under and return to L.A. And he failed to show up at her recent 61st birthday party.

Now friends fear the mother-son tension is destroying Barbara -- and the strain is sadly evident in her tired appeaance.

"Barbara's been a wreck," declared a pal.

"Not only is she heartsick over Jasson's medical condition, she's also devastated he won't allow her to help take care of him."

Added a family friend:

"Barbra's not sleeping at night. She's worried sick about Jason. She launched an all-out campaign to get Jason to leave New York and come home to L.A. -- but he's as headstrong as Barbra."

Jason insists on facing what's in store for him on his own -- and the stress is wrecking Barbra's life.

As the Enquirer reported exclsively in February, Barbra's only child, who tested positive for the AIDS virus three years ago, was hospitalized at he New York Weill Cornell Medical Center with a case of chicken pox -- which can be life-threatening in patients with compromised immune systems.

"Thge moment Jason was released from the hospital, Barbra once again began pleading with her son to leave his home in New York and move back to Los Angeles so she could watch over him," revealed the family friend.

The devoted mom even offered to supply Jason, her son by actor Elliott Gould, with a home near hers.

"She was desperate to make sure Jason was getting the best medical care possible. And because of all the work her Streisand Foundation is doing with AIDS research in Los Angeles, she felt Jason would get the best care possible there," explained the family friend.

But Jason is flatly refusing his mother's helping hand -- and that decision has taken a terrible toll on the Academy Award winner, disclosed an insider.

"Often times, expecially after a phone conversation with Jason, she will break down and cry to her husband (Jim Brolin).

"Jim tries his best to console her, but what can he say when there is notheing he can do?

"Although Barbra was never a social butterfly, she liked having friends come to her Malibu house. Now it seems as though all she wants is too be alone.

"And while her agents would love to see her take on another film project, she is hardly ever willing to pick up a script and read it. She spends a lot of time on the Internet and on the phone to her foundation, asking about the most recent medications to treat AIDS.

"She is constantly on the lookout for something new that can help Jason."

In Hollywood, Barbra is a major power broker, but with her own son she must keep hands off, and the dilemma is "tearing her apart," says her pal.

"Sometimes Barbra tears up at the mention of Jason or if she hears anything aoubt AIDS."

Jason realizes that Barbra's actions stem from the deep love she has for him, but he's determined to live his own life, added her pal.

"And on the other die, Barbra understands Jason's way of thinking, but she just wants to put him in a protective bubble so no one can hurt him.

"If they didn't love each other so much it wouldn't be so painful."

Barbra is also very concerned about the public's perception of her son's ordeal and believes it's best for him to shun publicity, but Jason has courageously spoken out about his HIV status.

In fact, a source says the mother-son rift has its roots in early 2001 when Jason, a talented actor in his own, right, decided to come out as a gay man in the Jan. 16, 2001, Advocate magazine.

The strain between the two was never more apparent than when Jason stayed away from his mother's 61st birthday celebration.

"Everybody else in the family was there," disclosed a close source.

And the insider added, "It was really sad on Barbra's 61st birthday -- April 24 -- that James and his children were with her but Jason did not come in from New York. She wanted so much to have him with her on her special day, but Jason told her he would not be making the trip."

Ironically, Barbra is duplicating her own family patterns, said the source.

"Barbra and Jason have the same love/hate relationship Barbra had with her own mother." The singer's mother, Diana Kind, died a year ago from complications from a fall.

"Jason moved to New York becuse he finds it difficult living in his mother's shadow in L.A.," added the source.

"He told a friend, 'Her biggest regret is that she doesn't have grandkids -- but we don't talk about that a lot.'"

Before Jason was struck by chicken pox, Barbra had begun relaxing her controlling ways and the tension eased. Jason repsonded by visiting and calling regularly. But his recent medical crisis fired up Barbra's mothering instincts, say sources.

Concluded the insider: "Barbra fears the worst for Jason and wants so much for him to let his mother protect him. But there's nothin she can do but stand by and watch him handle his illness on his own.

"I hope there is a way for Barbra to come to peace with all his becuase she is doing Jason abslutely no good by running herself into the ground."

Which will kill him -- AIDS or his mother? It's a toss up.

.....How is Streisand going to blame her son's faggitude and the consequences of his deviant perversions on President Bush and the Republicans?" She will, you know. Count on it!.....

How about enlightenment..... seeing the vision. The scales of liberalism fall from her eyes. The death of he son produces spasms of reaction resulting in violent rejection of evil liberalism. There is a reason for conservatism. Humanity knows truth.

If Hanoi Jane can get religion, can Lincoln Bedroom Babe find redemption?

I would bet my next two paychecks that Babs did not write a single word of that rambling missive. While I am sure it reflects her hysterical paranoia, I nearly sprayed coffee while reading her angst over the Supreme Court's invalidation of Congressional power grabs via an unconstitutional application of the commerce clause. Do you believe for a moment that Babs has even an inkling of the origination of this basis for Congress arrogating rule-making over states and trumping the sphere of states' rights in favor of an expansion of federal power well beyond what the framers ever intended?

She is a vain kook who hired a ghost-writer nut to create for her the veneer of intellectual credentials. She so wants to be accepted as influential when she likely has no clue.

Come to think of it, she may have contributed this part:

We have a president who stole the presidency through family ties, arrogance and intimidation, employing Republican operatives to exercise the tactics of voter fraud by disenfranchising thousands of blacks, elderly Jews and other minorities.

In any event, her plagiarized posing doesn't make me forget that she was the most brazen example of IPO spinning whores in the Internet boom (go see the story of the eLoan IPO, when Bab's called up the CEO pre-IPO--unsolicited--and asked to be put on the friends and families list even though the CEO had never met her).

She is a repulsive hypocrite.

She and her son have my sympathies and prayers. I wonder, though, if she'd feel the same if a conservative icon were similarly afflicted.

She would not if she is like George Clooney, who has disgustingly ridculed Charlton Heston's Alzeimer's condition, and basically saying he deserves it, the little prick.

Typical of a Clinonista, it isn't about Jason with the AIDS it it about Barbara and her pain. If she really cared for the man whe would want him to live his life as he wants. I wonder if Bill feels her pain with her? His forte don'chaknow!

Sorry, but I don't understand why it is mandatory to "feel" something for this woman and her son. We don't personally know them, (thank heaven), She is almost as mean as Hillary, maybe more mean. Our demise, the President's demise, the twin's demise would thrill the warbling witch.
I think great restraint and civility was exercised in the statement "I feel nothing for them". It is acceptable, not mean, unless you are touchy, feely all the time, for everyone.

Forgive me too, but for what she has done and said about our President I feel nothing for her.
For Jason I am sad, but he choose his life, and he knew the risk.
Also they are not the only son's and mother's facing the AIDS problem, so why even make her the subject of any thing in our conservative forum.
Barbara can drop dead!

Babs is dumb; Hiltlery is coniving and very dangerous - big difference.

Glad to see most freepers here have the maturity to show compassion proving that we are a party of adults vs. the vicious, childish statements made on liberal boards about Heston's alzheimers or Mike Kelly's unfortunate death.

Ultimately, political adults and their wisdom tend to win out.

I feel great, and fine when my enemies are in pain. These are the enemy, they are barely human beings. Yes, its easy to wish bad things on people when you de-humanize them, but they started this fight against us a long time ago, and they have collaborated with nations that want to destroy the United States. So I laugh at them when ever I can, even in their moments of intense sorrow. Have a nice day!

well, either you feel sympathy for them or not,,can't blame people for having no feeling about something. But I cannot help but think that if it were my child either I would go to them or I would respect what they wished for and if that were to live across the country, well I would grant that with grace and love. I think I might ask what could I do and do what they wished. It is about the dying child not the diva mom. Nevertheless I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. But it is true that people are living a long time with aids,,it is not the death sentence it used to be what with new drugs etc. I know a man who has had the full syndrome for ove 12 years and he is doing well on on all those medications. It must be so horrid to the people who got it carelessly,,sort of like smokers getting cancer. You knew it but didn't believe it till it happened.

The only AIDS victims are those who contracted the disease via tainted blood transfusions. All the other cases are volunteers.

Dying of AIDS is worse in what way? Even the mythic "died in his sleep" just means that someone died overnight at home. Absent witnesses or videotape, who knows how painful these lucky deaths are?

I've seen people die from car wrecks, stabbings, gunshot wounds, drowning, heart attack, stroke, aids, falls from cliffs, trench collapses, beatings, just about every way you can think of. The best way in the world to die still sucks. And yes, I've seen people die from AIDS. It sucks because it takes several years for your body to rot.

well, it is A fair question when you consider George Clooney
was pleased to learn that Charlton Heston had alzheimers. Also, DU types were glad that Mike Kelly died. Julianne Malveaux hopes Clarence Thomas eats a lot of fat and dies of a heart attack. Perhaps, I'm wrong but I somehow don't think the Clintons were upset about the death of Barbara Olson.

Regardless of how they behave (which is all too often terrible) it is a great tragedy that her son apparently has AIDS. What a terrible thing to deal with!
