Clay Aiken(l) was still smiling after Ruben Studdard was named the "Idol" winner.

'AMERICAN IDOL 2" runner-up Clay Aiken already knew he had lost to Ruben Studdard at least five minutes before the decision was announced, show judge Simon Cowell said yesterday.

Would "French Idol" involve the losers waving white flags?

Did you see the French version excerpts they played early on Wednesday night? Interesting.

Two sorts of responses have puzzled me on these threads about AI

1. The people who feel they have to express their superiority over anyone who might enjoy such “dreck”—do they do it for the ego boost? Why do they think anyone cares whether they like the show or not?

2. The people who seem overly fascinated with homosexuality—and have to insist that Clay is gay. First, why would his being gay have any bearing on how good a performer he is—and second, have they seen the picture of Clay before the AI people made him over? As someone said, in his natural state, he looks a lot more like the president of the chess club than like a flamboyant gay guy.

Can someone please tell me why people who post yawns and zzzz even bother to come to these threads and waste the space?

Gosh knows I wonder the same thing. Apparently they click into the thread for the sole purpose of telling us how uninterested they are? HUH?

This whole thing is stupid.

Then WHY are you here on this thread? You enjoy reading about stupid things that don't interest you, and discussing stupid things you've never seen that don't interest you? I'm puzzled by your presence.

1.3 million in record sales is nothing. Shania Twain averages 20 million per album, while Faith Hill averages 13-14 million in sales. Now that's selling some CD's. Will have to see what Kelly does in another month or two. Justin (who) will be lucky to sell a million, unless they count the ones in the bargain bins.

Which prompts me to say. Who gives a rats rear end about this.

I really enjoyed Kelly's performance on American Idol the first season, but I was not impressed by Miss Independant (the 2 times she sang it during the 2nd season).

Speaking for myself, I want to buy an album that showcases her natural and downright amazing range and ability, not a typical hip-hop dance track that only sounds good on CD.

When Kelly puts out an album that "shows her stuff", I'll be the first to buy it.

If that's the case he misspoke. He'd been talking about talent over image all season.

>If that's the case he misspoke. He'd been talking about talent over image all season.

He knew exactly what he was saying. Clay is clearly the superior talent, by far and away, and Simon has been saying all along "You have a great voice but you just don't fit the image of the American Idol." He can sell a guy like Ruben. I just hope he lets the young man sing what he likes to sing and doesn't try to complete the picture he (Simon) has in mind and turn him into a "rapper".

Personally, I've never witnessed manipulation like this on what was billed as an honest reality tv show in my life.

Shania Twain has one album that went to 19 platinum (million) and another that went to 12. The one that hit 12 took 5 years to get there from gold (half a million). The one that went to 19 ALSO took 5 years to make the climb from gold to current cap ( http://www.riaa.com/Gold-Intro-2.cfm you'll have to plug in for your own searches the results page doesn't make unique or reproducable URLs ). Definitely not averaging 20 mil, and taking a lot longer than Kelly has even been around.

Faith Hill has one that went to 7 plat, one to 5 and two to 4. Got some numbers problems with your estimations.

Canada for real?! It may be good only because there are so many of us living there ;)

It's for real. CTV, starting June 11th. The final auditions are in Toronto on Monday.

Four judges instead of three, none of whom I've ever heard of. One host, who I've never heard of. And two "correspondents," who I've never heard of, and what they're going to "report" on I have no idea.

I may have to beg someone to tape it for me, because I know nobody down here is going to pay for the rights to air it, and I have a feeling that, in the immortal words of Butt-Head, it is going to suck as no show has sucked before. To me, it's like airing "Texas Idol" or "Massachusetts Idol." There just aren't enough people in Canada to have a decent-sized pool of contestants to choose from, so the quality of the singing is going to HAVE to be lower unless they get very very lucky. There's no Simon, who is INTEGRAL to the format. I doubt CTV can afford to put on the big-bucks extravaganza that Fox was able to produce. Etc etc.

We shall see, I guess.

There's no excuse for top of the head numbers anymore. If you can get to FR you can get to real numbers. Hopefully nobody thinks I'm belittling the accomplishments of either Twain or Hill, they're both talented and very successful (and good posterbait... oh to be a teenager again, kids today have much better poster girls than I did), their accomplishments are good enough without exaggeration. To paraphrase an old boss: it's like claiming you've got 15 inches down below when you've got 12, stick with the truth it's impressive enough.

Would "French Idol" involve the losers waving white flags?

Judging from what little of the French auditions they showed Wednesday night, I think we'd be the ones waving the white flags.

Over there it has the utterly uncool title "A la Recherche de la Nouvelle Star," which pretty much translates as "The Search for a New Star."

I've watched some video from the French show; the funniest part is that they're making them sing bad 70s songs too, OUR bad 70s songs. Lemme tell ya, "Oh What a Night (December 1963)" sounds like CRAP when it's sung in French by a bunch of teenagers.
