West Wing finale..."President" Sheen invokes 25th. Hastert look-alike John Goodman takes over.

In case you all missed it, the West Wing ended its season last night, and obviously Aaron Sorkin has been smoking 'shrooms again. Sorkin has also left the show, as writer and creative force, but he's leaving his peculiarly distorted vision of political reality for the next group of writers to untangle. If you're interested, let me summarize events for you...

I do not like the "kidnap the daughter" plot line. It might give malcontents ideas. That's the idea, I would bet.

do you concur with my assessment that Goodman casting is inspired...that's he's definitely playing Hastert?

Is Goodman evil in this show? All I can think about is Dan Tanner from Roseanne where he sits at the kitchen table in his flannel shirt and big hair....

Actually, this is an extremely clever way to keep the show on, by cleansing it of Democrats and starting over with a Republican administration, assuming the Goodman character is a Republican.

Why is the Speaker of the House sworn in? What about the VP?

Bartlett is doing his typical mumbling and philosophizing. Goodman character says, "Mr. President, you are dismissed." Bartlett, realizing he's no longer in power, hangs his head and walks out. It was a great scene to watch, for sure.
I'll second that.
A verbal bitch slap to the sheen character if there ever was one!

Is he evil because he is a republican on the show?

The VP has resigned do the fact that he was sharing state secrets with his mistress...
The Bartlett WH is in the midst of appointing a new one for confirmation.
So, the Speaker of the House is now the President.

24 was good this year.
However, the VP taking over was a bit farfetched, unless it shows in the final hour that the plot had been going on for a long time before.
It kind of lost credibility--thinking in terms of 24 (1 day) and not weeks of viewing during the season for--
--bomb goes off
--3 or 4 hours (realtime) (weeks viewtime) later VP and cabinet meet to invoke 25th and unseat president
That's just too quick for reality and dented the credibility of this season.
Other than that, 24 maintains interest and reminds me of the old timey cliffhanger serials.

What a piece of crap! Was it always this sucky?
To: ken5050
Haha... I actually caught the ending-- hey, it comes on before Law and Order. Happens that way. I was pretty gratified, though, to see Bartlett handing the reins over to a wascally Wepublican. Harharhar.
But you're right-- this is probably just a lead-in to A Show About The Horrors Of A Republican Presidency. Under John Goodman, taxes will increase to 147% of your income; attendance at Wednesday night services at a gov't-sanctioned Baptist church will be mandated; all women will be forced to wear dresses and drop out of the work force to become pregnant and join knitting classes; senior citizens will be mauled en masse to save healthcare spending; minority groups will be forced to have their own separate facilities again like water fountains and interstate highways; school children will be put on a work-learn program where inbetween learning that the earth is flat, they manufacture license plates; McCarthy's ghost will be resurrected and anybody who so much as sneezes on the GOP agenda will be lined up and shot; missionary only, and any deviators will be lined up and shot; and all U.S. troops will immediately be deployed on the massive and ambitious "Operation Bomb the Whole G-dd--n World"...
