War and Peaceniks

A couple of weeks ago I walked into my office and saw that someone had placed a poster on my desk which advertised a "walk out" in protest of Bush's war on terrorism. Unlike the walkouts of the sixties which were organized by students, this event was organized by a number of UNC-Wilmington professors and staff members, some of whom are avowed socialists.

The poster reflected all of the usual tactfulness and refinement of the University Left. Beside a picture of President Bush with the word "bully" printed across his forehead, there was a picture of Lady Liberty shoving a sword up the rectum of a dove. And, of course, no anti-war poster would be complete without desecrating the American flag. This particular poster did so by portraying the stripes of Old Glory in the form of air pollution trailing a squadron of B1 bombers.

When these posters were placed all over campus, a number of students were predictably offended. In fact, many had family members fighting in the conflict. I was shocked to find that the posters had been run off at taxpayer expense by a professor who had cancelled her classes for a week just to organize the protest. Instead of attending the classes they paid for, students were given "extra-credit" for listening to their professors denigrate their president and their country.

I was pleased when some of the students who were offended took action by making hundreds of pro war flyers which they posted all over campus. Unfortunately, university employees removed scores of them from the student union under the pretense that they were "offensive." Nonetheless, the same employees were not offended by dozens of magazines which were previously left in the same area by gay activists. Their literature was allowed to remain despite the fact that it contained a photograph of two gay men engaged in anal sex. Nor was there any effort to remove a large sign left by the Women's Resource Center earlier in the semester which called for all "P**sies" to unite and attend a feminist play called the Vagina Monologues.

Eventually, the promotion phase ended and the big day of the "walk out" finally came around. The main event, which was a panel of several faculty members discussing their opposition to the war, was attended by only a handful of peace activists. Most students who had their classes cancelled were probably taking in the sun at nearby Wrightsville Beach.

One conservative graduate student as well as a conservative faculty member (whose identity you will have to guess) decided to display mocking posters outside of the building where the faculty "discussion" panel was being held. One poster simply had pictures of women and children who had been murdered in chemical weapons attacks launched during Saddam's reign of terror. Another said "Please go home American soldiers...Iraqis enjoy being raped, tortured, and gassed by Saddam."

Naturally, the "open minded" organizers of the event weren't too receptive to these dissenting opinions. In fact, one university employee (the male secretary of one of the organizing professors) called the police on the theory that the two silent protestors were not allowed to stand outside the building where the panel was being held.

When three police cars arrived, they got a lecture explaining the unconstitutionality of the provision in the university handbook delineating the outside of the building as a "no free speech zone." This only took about fifteen minutes with the help of a few U.S. Supreme Court case citations and the promise of a lawsuit in the event of any arrests.

The day was all capped off with a rally under the university clock tower which featured an "open microphone" for students to express their views on the war. Despite the fact that pro-war students outnumbered the peaceniks, none were allowed to take the microphone to express their support of the war.

Fortunately, pro-war students organized their own rally two weeks later in response to the faculty led peace protest. I was honored to be the only professor asked to speak at the event, even though openly pro-war professors are hard to come by at the university. Of course, before I spoke the university police had to remove sticks which were jammed into the electrical outlets by war protestors attempting to sabotage the rally. When I finally took the microphone, I noticed that the event was better attended than the anti-war rally. This, despite the fact that the university did not advertise the event on the university website like they had done for the peace rally.

During my speech, I shared a story I heard from an Iraqi woman who previously lived under Saddam's regime. She told of her neighbors having their tongues cut out for speaking out against the Iraqi dictator. She also told of the practice of forcing dissenters' to watch while their children were raped and sodomized by Iraqi soldiers. In closing, I suggested that the best judges of the morality of the war in Iraq are the Iraqi citizens. Not socialist professors who decry American imperialism over four dollar lattes.

Of course, my comments weren't well received by the local peace protestors.

After sending me several e-mails calling me names too obscene to reprint, I felt rather relieved. After all, at least they didn't send viruses to crash my computer. That's what happened to a city councilman who dared to propose a resolution in support of the war.

Although the peace protesters have suffered a few recent setbacks, they remain confident that they can construct a Utopian society. With their penchant for obscene messages, vandalism, and computer terrorism, they just might pull it off. If not, they can always become college professors.

It is odd how the forces of liberalism seem to thrive within the realm of government subsidy, is it not?

You realize that the Leftist forces in our culture wish to create our society in Sadam's image. A society where speech is free as long as you say what they want, where disenting viewpoints are squashed with police aid.

One of the reasons the "peacenics" supported Sadam so forcefully is that he was the only one in the battle they could identify with.

One of these days we will be reading about the massive amounts of Middle East Blood money that has come from the Opecker Princes and thugs to our universities/colleges. This Opecker Blood money for decades has funded Hate America, Hate Jews and Hate Israel under the guise of the phoney peace movement at our so called high institutes of learning.

There is a great thread on FR right now about massive Hate America/Jews/Israle funding at UC Berkeley by an Opecker Prince.

Where is the Money From? (Colleges welcome money from anti-semitic hate groups)

The Center for Middle East Studies at UC Berkeley says in its mission statement that "the center aims to reach the broadest possible constituency, working with a variety of organizations and individuals to discover new avenues for scholarly outreach and cooperation (http://ias.berkeley.edu/cmes)." Such goals are respectable and embody those which a university should strive to provide for its students. As part of its goal to promote understanding, CMES has been responsible for the many lectures and presentations about the situation in the Middle East over the past year. Former speakers include revisionist Israeli historian Illan Pappe and Palestinian activist Edward Said. However, can the Center accomplish its stated goal of heightening "awareness of the Middle East and of its diverse peoples and cultures" when the funding for such an institution comes from dubious sources?

Here's a concept, that kids can understand, but liberals can not. "Peace does not by definition mean, the absence of war".

Marxists and Socialists teachers have not fully infiltrated the primary and secondary schools. However, there are plenty near big cities. It's important to teach a child early on about "independent thinking."

I wonder if the word "peace" would ever become part of our language without "war?"

I don't know if the word war would ever have become part of our language without peace, and peace doesn't have to mean status quo. If history has taught us anything, you do not have to be in war to be without peace, i.e. french revolution, spanish inquisition, race riots, church bombings, the reign of terror, etc.

Good point! I can't think of any time we actually had peace.

There have been many peacefull times during our history, but many times where there has not been peace. My thing is, War and Peace are not polar opposites, they do not mean the abssence of each other. I wish these idiot war protesters could realize that.

"I wish these idiot war protesters could realize that."

I'm a teacher in an inner city public high school. But once upon a time I was a US Army Officer, (Infantry Captain) home on leave right after the crushing success of the 1983 Grenada Operation. Only about twelve people died on that operation and I knew two of them...one was my former rifle platoon medic, SP/4 Kevin Lannon. I got him into the Ranger Battalion from my old outfit at the 9th Infantry Division. The 9th was put on alert for grenada but we never actually went.

So, I took leave and went home to Miami, FL. I was walking across the UofM campus (SunTan Univ.) in my Class "A" uniform to use the autovon line at the Army ROTC bldg so I could check in with my boss. This little teenie bopper bimbo of about 18 years old all dressed up in a tie dyed tee shirt, love beads, peace symbols and flowers...the works. She skips (I swear SKIPS) up to me...hands me this cute little flower and says: "Gee Mr SOLDIER...PEACE AND LOVE!!!"

So I took the flower...looked at her and her dipsy friends.....and deliberately ATE it. They freaked out! What a blast.

peace symbols and flowers

You mean the Peace symbol-the broken cross, the German symbol for the letter "r"? ;)

"the broken cross..."

Yes, THAT one...the SATANIC symbol which is supposed to stand for the defeat of Christ (upside down cross with the arms broken) and enclosed by a circle (indicating eternity). The eternal enemy really pulled a fast one on those kids by conning them into a false belief...well, thats what HE does!

"was she at least cute?"

You know...for a moment...I felt REALLY bad...because she was just a DOLL. A real sweetie. But then she opened her mouth and out came the propaganda and I realized that beauty is only skin deep but stupid goes all the way to the bone. She was skipping because it was October in Miami and warm whereas I'll bet that wherever she was from was probably buried neck deep in snow. I'd probably be skipping too...no I wouldn't. As I recall she had a funny accent. Yankee something....
