VANITY: Hannity Fans, help me identify this song...
Petronski
Posted on 05/07/2003 4:23:30 PM PDT by Petronski
Every day he opens the top of each hour of his show with 'Let Freedom Ring.' That song I know. But after that there is a short piece of an orchestral choral work...very ominous and frightening sounding, like a requiem. It might even be opera.
Can someone identify that song for me?

No problem at all. That is the tail end of the chorus "O Fortuna, velut luna" - "Oh Fortune, Changeable as the Moon" from Carl Orff's
Carmina Burana It's a very good opera - and there's a stunning ballet that goes with it. Orff set a series of medieval students' poems in Latin and German.

I've wondered about that - cool sounding. Though having a minor feel, it ends on a major chord based on the tonic, and does it well.

Looks like he has stoped using the Bruce Hornsby piano intro at the end.
GOOD!

Oh Fortuna occurs at the beginning and in the finale. It's a wonder piece of music; many many different genres within it. When Orff completed it he publically denounced all of his previous works. A companion piece is called "Catulli Carmina."

That reminds me of Ivan the Terrible, who put out the architect's eyes when St. Basil's Cathedral was finished.
