President George W. Bush is far ahead of the three most popular Democrats in head to head matchups, although the public still has concerns about his economic leadership and empathy for ordinary people, according to a new poll.

Bush leads Mass. Sen. John Kerry, Conn. Sen. Joe Lieberman and Missouri Rep. Dick Gephardt by nearly identical margins in the three matchups.

The President gets the support of six in 10 while the Democratic candidate gets the support of just over a third according to an ABC News poll released Saturday.

When Democrats and those who lean Democratic were asked who they perferred to be their nominee, 29 percent said Lieberman, 19 percent chose Gephardt, and 14 percent picked Kerry.

The others were in single digits. Former Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley Braun had 6 percent, North Carolina Sen. John Edweards 4 percent, Rev. Al Sharpton 3 percent, and Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich had 2 percent.

Lieberman came the closest at 61-34 and factoring in margin for error that could be as low as 65-30

Needless to say, ABCNEWS Radio at the top of the hour spun this as "Bush is in big trouble if the election ends up revolving around the economy."

Yawn. As per usual, barring another 9/11, the margin will close to a hairs breath with GW inching ahead in the polls come election time. The actual vote will "shock" the establishment by being a comfortable win for GW.

Keep a close eye on the New York Times emphasising negative economic news by bringing it above the front page fold as election time nears.

* Kucinich is going to be the Natural Law Party candidate (check the P2004 page of www.politics1.com for his endorsement by them; Fellow space-cadet John Hagelin says he isn't running)
* Dean will be Ralph Nader's Green Party running mate (my prediction)

* I also predict a Lieberman-Hart ticket. ...but then again, Al2 could surprise us all.
Anyway, FUN, FUN, FUN in the '04 political sun.

And I also see Reverend Al running as a 3rd party Independent after the Democratic Primary.

Excellent point, the war on terror is a domestic issue-that is something the Dims don't understand.

Lieberman is much stronger nationally polling amongst the Dims base, but Kerry can match Bush dollar for dollar (250 million worth) without wasting time fundraising.

I personally would much rather face a Lieberman/Edwards ticket than Kerry/Bradley in the general..that is the matchup that gives Rove nightmares

I don't mind particularly those who want to vote for the liberal party. They desire socialism and, with any of these jokers, they'd get it.

What I don't understand are the undecideds? What the hell are THEY thinking???

Recent state polls of the Democratic race have shown Gephardt ahead in Iowa, Lieberman ahead in South Carolina and Kerry ahead in New Hampshire. A new Mason-Dixon poll of New Hampshire voters taken April 23-26 gave Kerry the lead with 28 percent, with Dean at 21 percent, Lieberman at 14 percent and Gephardt at 11 percent. Other candidates were in the low single digits and 23 percent were undecided. The New Hampshire poll of 327 likely Democratic primary voters had an error margin of plus or minus 5.5 percentage points.

Looks like they have a good fight going.....
