They did mock him after the 9/11 bombing. There was credible evidence that he was a target and thus the criss-cross across America to get to one of our secure Command Post at Offutt. The USSS didn't want him to go back when he did.

According to the CBS special last year (it aired just before the re-broadcast of the documentary hosted by De Niro), the President actually forced AF1 to return to DC counter to the SS's wishes. I believed he said something to the effect of "I'm not going to let some tin-horn terrorist keep me out of Washington."
